Money Cowrie

OK I just got what the lfs said is a money cowrie. I needed something for my hair algea that has exploded since putting in the 250w MH. I have read (after the fact) that cowries eat corals. Is this fact, fiction or sometimes yes and sometimes no? All I have is a sick candy cane, (three months of 30 watt NO flourescent), but it is starting to recover since adding the new lighting. Do I need to take him (Cowrie) back or will it be ok?

Most cowrie's arenot considered reef safe.
However Money's and gold rings are supposed to only eat algea.
So there for are considered reef safe, As long as its one of those 2 spieces
