Montana Reefers........Anyone Here?

Whoa! This thread is back from the dead! Well, as for my post from 2006, the 150 has come and gone (moved into a new house) but it's still in service in our old house. Currently planning and building a 300g plywood and glass tank.

nicfo, your best (and only) bet in Billings for a reef LFS is Heights Pet Center. I know the owners and they're good people but it is an LFS in Montana so don't expect it to be uber fantastic. They do have some nice pieces now and again though. Unfortunately, I have found myself doing most of my business online as I just can't get what I want locally. Good luck!

Wade,

YOu better share your pictures with us on that project!

Glad you jumped in here.

As far as LFS.

There is a new store going in Bozeman. Crystal Clear Aquariums. I hope they are successful in making it happen. Right now there is no store in Bozeman and I do almost all orders online.

I recently moved to Bozeman to attend MSU. I'm in my second semester in the Science & Natural History Filmmaking program, and I'm currently looking for interested locals who may want to have their reef tanks featured in a student film. If you think you might be interested, or know of someone else who may be, please let me know.

Just starting up in billings lookin for used equipment.... Lights, sump, RODI, pumps and the like.... Any reef clubs up yet?

My job offers a transfer to the office in Billings MT...I've considered looking at housing in Laurel, MT. Any ideas guys?

Laurel isn't a bad idea, avoid the "heights" in Billings, all newbies move to the Heights because housing is cheap to soon find out what a pain in the rear it is to drive back into Billings.
Most good shopping is at the opposite end of the heights in Billings on King Ave nearest Laurel, especially the best restaurant -Staggering Ox.

I don't know about reef clubs in Billings, there is one reef shop I went to last fall that was in pretty rough shape.
I generally make the trip to Bozeman to purchase supplies-well actually "the four corners" in Belgrade and visit Tanner at Crystal Clear Aquariums. Tanner knows how to build a store front! He has great inventory and reef club information. He also delivers all over the state as part of his aquarium maintenance program.
I was going to start a reef club in Helena this winter, but got too busy.

Wow! There's actually people around here still besides me that are into reefs? :D

There are no reef clubs that I know of and the ONLY game in town these days for saltwater of any kind is Heights Pet Center. I haven't been out there for ages since I'm still in a buliding phase with my current tank but Ron and Patty try to keep a clean and decent shop even if it's mostly bread and butter. staggering is probably refering to another shop that used to be in the Heights that was garbage. I think it's no more.

Like I said, HPC has mostly bread and butter stuff but I do occasionally find some nice peices but definitely have to supplement with buying online if I want some of the fancier stuff.

Bryc, for used stuff local, Craigslist is probably your best bet. There's a good amout of aquarium stuff there but not a lot dedicated to reef especially if you're looking for something more than a powerfilter and a Maxi Jet powerhead. Your best bet will be the for sale forums here at Reef Central.

If you want small town living but still be close to the big town, Laural is your ticket. But I understand city water is a lot more expensive there than in Billings and I think housing prices are pretty comparable both places.

staggering is right about the Heights. Good housing prices but a pain in the rear to drive in and out of every day. City planners did a horrible job planning traffic flow in and out of the Heights and it's taking years to fix it. Not sure if it will ever be.

There are a lot of nice subdivisions popping up between Billings and Laural with price points all over the board. You could get a nice newer house "in the country" if you want and still be close to major city conveniences. You may or may not have to deal with cistern and/or septic depending on the subdivision you're looking at though.

thanks cyclist for the info... i spend alot of time at HPC. probly gettin a batch of LR this weekend from them. its nice to find someone with some experience locally. i am posting my current setup as i get it going... 75gal setup(in progress)
tho nothing of an undertaking in comarison to 300

Wow a reef thread about montana? I'm in billings Bryckitall and since I consolidated my two tanks into one I have some good extra equipment im looking to sell. I have a 125 mixed reef and HPC does get some better stuff in the last year. I try to gode Ron into upping his SPS orders. I picked up a pretty cool millie there for cheap.

Im always hoping to make some flesh and blood reefing buddies, not that I don't have plenty of forum people around the area I talk to. We should totaly try to get more people together for a reef club. A local guy named Chris tried to start one a couple years back it never really took off.

There's a reef store in Bozeman it's awesome!! Blows HPC out of the water
I drove through a blizzard to get there n it was worth it
