Montipora Danae

I bought a montipora danae about 3 weeks ago. It's blue with green & red polyps.

I had it placed about 15 inches under the water and my 10x80W T5's sit 6" above the water. It was in moderate random flow to the side of one of my MP40's.

Today, I noticed it wasn't looking so healthy and some very tiny patches of random tissue loss.

I'm worried about this coral, as it's one of my favourites. All other corals are looking fine including monti digi, confusa, spumosa, capitata and also loads of different acro's and pocciloporas and stylophoras.

I can't understand what's wrong with this coral, all parameters are fine, no fluctuations.

I've also checked thoroughly for nudi's and can't see anything unusual.

Did I have it positioned wrong?

You may have light shocked it. Try moving it down to the bottom of the tank for a while and see if this helps. What type of lighting use it under when you got it? Post your water parameters also.

I also have a superman monti danae. I have it under a 250w watt mh about 6 inches under the surface with high flow. Mine just snted a little for no real reason but it has stopped.

I think it is a harder sps to keep. This is my second, my first stned on my to and died. I just found this on care tips for them, might help. http://www.thesea.org/montipora/Montipora_Danae.htm

The monti's I have prefer to be blasted with flow.

Just like a large tall grassy field with lots of wind.

Maybe those patches are from Nudis? Let's hope not though!

Hey,

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure what lighting it was under at the shop but I know that the shipment had only come into the store the day before I bought the coral.

I'm not sure what sort of growth formations this monti has but when I bought it, it was mounted upright on a piece of rock but when I added it to my system, I mounted it flat, does it naturally grow in an upright position??

Thanks for the link, it seems that I should be giving it plenty of light and flow so I might try and move it up the tank and into better flow.

My params are:

Salinity: 35ppt
Temperature: 26 degrees C
pH: 8.4
NH: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: 0.2
PO4: 0.03
Mag: 1450
Cal: 430
Alk: 7.0dKH
K+: 380

I"m running ZEOvit ULNS which is why my alk is quite low.

Here are a couple of pictures of the coral, the first is when I first got the coral and the second is from today, you can see the tissue loss on the left hand side at the front of the coral.

Flip that pokerstar and look underneath, check for stips/ribbons of egg clusters or the actual nudi's themselves. Need to confirm and eliminate 1 factor at a time.

Something is definitely disturbing the coral to cause it not to open up the polyps.

I've examined the coral all over (and under) and I can't see any eggs or nudi's. I think I'd notice them but I can't see anything. Would the nudi's / eggs be and I'll triple check.

I've moved the coral to a breeding trap so that we can try and eliminate any possible tank-mate interference.
