We all know about the elasticity of coral growth patterns (especially Montipora!) so I would question any type of ID tossed out here but hey... knock your socks off!

This Monti does not match the "spongodes" shown on many websites.

Its not really a close up, so I'm taking a guess because of both the branch and plating. My other guess would be Monitipora Hispida.

I've noticed that coral in your shots before and thought it was spongodes, but I've never seen spongodes take that growth pattern. Nice specimen.

proper sps identification to species

proper sps identification to species

is difficult for coral taxonomists... especially with Montipora!

as far as I know the aims coralsearch site isn't available. Even if it were, how can you see the skeleton of this Monti?

FWIW I have Veron's epic 'Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific' and I don't dare make a fool of myself trying to guess what species it is. It is what it is.... a nice Montipora.

I appreciate all the speculation, though.
How 'bout that phat orange torch at the bottom left ;)
