Montipora ID

Anyone? Encrusting with a darkish green base, solid white growth tips, and nice orange polyps. Fast grower. Thanks

Looks a lot like a "Seasons Greetings" Montipora. I think the same Monti is also called "Chilli Pepper" Monti. If you're looking for a species ID, my guess would be M. nodosa or M. tuberculosa.

I think the polyps are too close together to be a season's greetings or chili pepper. Here is a pic of chili pepper I got a few weeks ago. Not the best color yet.

I am thinking M. Undata http://sdmas.com/corals/278.php

As for "names" I saw a good article this morning about that. A Rant and a Plea. I wish i could post a link, but to summarize. Coral naming is respectively given to corals with lineage. Not ome that looks similar. So if you didn't receive this frag as a "Chili Pepper" or "Seasons Greeting" then why rename it so?

Thanks for the link, that's a great resource. I was just curious if this monti did have a common name. The second one I did actually buy as a "chili pepper monti," but I doubt it has the same lineage as the original chili pepper. (?)

I guess Encrusting Montipora, or Plate Coral would be a common name.

My personal thoughts on show names (ex. Chili Pepper Montipora) would be that they should be used to describe lineage from an exact coral not look a likes. So I think your piece looks like a Monti originally called Jedi Mind Trick. But if you did not get it as a Jedi Mind Trick then you are making a fake.

You wouldn't want me to pay with fake money, so I don't want to buy a fake named coral.
