Montipora Issue

I have an encrusting Montipora that's not doing that well. I'm wondering if it's because of the light change from 150 MH to 250 or something worse, like the monti nudi's. Pic isn't great but here it is.
Any ideas?

try a magnifying glass for checking for nudis. If you can move the coral pick it up and turn it over to look for egg patches near the edge of the coral. They are sometimes yellow, white, or orange. You have to use a good magnifying glass though or you wont see them they are very very small. As for the light the wound doesnt appear to be caused by the light. I would look at night with a red light. I had a crab or 2 eating monti in my tank up until about 2 weeks ago and I only found them once the lights were out. They would just munch and munch. I used my tongs to grab them but I did have to remove 2 15lb rocks to get them. LOL

Are the adult nudis small enough that you have to use a magnifying glass? Does this look like the damage nudis would do?

I try to return your PM earlier but it won let me.
Anyways, Nudis usualy dont start in the middle. That something like salt flake accidently drop,that acumilates along the top rim of your tank.
If it is a nudi. they will target the underside of that monti frist and work there way up. Its big enough to see this ( kinda like Berghia nudi that eats aptasia only smaller , white, baige , or pinkish )
 
Yeah menard, my box was full, I cleaned it out.

The monti is in the middle of the tank so I'm not sure how I would have gotten salt creep on it. It's getting bigger and bigger, not rapidly but noticible throughout the week.
 
Can U still able to take'em out ? brush'em off , dip the Q-tip in lugols and apply that onto the infected area then place it back in the tank.
 
If thats what I have to do, then I'll do it. There are a couple of other acros on the rock but thats no worries if I'm just dabbing it and putting it back.
Do you think this coral can fight this or do I need to be pro-active? Now I have to get some lugols also!
 
Are U sure its a Nudi.,do U see any ?
Yes! they can fight it, If thats only irritation from the salt.
Nudis. no!, U have to eradicate all of them or they will
sneak back at you.
What kind of Wrasse do U have ?
 
Don't forget to view it at night to see if something else isn't eating it! Could be some MONSTER worm or creepy crawly thing that hides all day, I have seen that happen also. The red light works wonders to find things in the dark. I wouldn't be dead set on nudis just yet! Look for other things too.

I thought you were saying that it might be an infection and the lugols would treat that.

Yes! lugols would take care of that.
You should buy 1 wrasse at least, any Halichoeres family will do. They protect the corals and clams as well.
 
I'd have to get two, one for the 30 and the 75 even though they are plumbed together I would think. What type of wrasse would be good in the 30 cube that wouldn't get to large?
 
I would look for the cause before jumping in the car and running to the LFS for a fish you may not need, and that may unnecessarily increase the bioload of your tank and then further put your inhabitants under horrible stress. My opinion, find the cause then decide whether a new tank mate is needed to fix the problem. Not only that, wrasses won't totally eradicate a problem bug they will only keep it under control and that is hopeful too. Eggs hatch at a great rate will eventually cause more problems even though a wrasse is in the tank, but that is if it truly is a nudi problem to begin with. Take a look at night over the next few days and then you will be sure if it is another inhabitant or not.

P.S. Wal-Mart has them in the Sporting Goods section. They are included in some lights used by fishermen that strap to your head. I got a three light combo and use it for fishing and fishing in my tank at night for problem bug scouting! But that hardly happens since I found those darn crabs in the tank and killed em.

Monti nudis don't always start on the underside or the edge. Do you have other montis in the tank?

You will see the adult ones and after you spot them you will see them all over if they are in there. You'll kick yourself saying, "how did I not see these earlier". They will be many and obvious once you identify.

But it may not be them that's causing this.
 
not sure what it is, I'm going to take the rock out tonight and look for the nudi's.
Where can I get lugols? Checked both premium and marine depot, nothing.
