HI all,

Q) What clear coral/clam/caulerpa gains have you seen by using a moonlight on your reef?

Q) Anybody stop using moonlights and see no ill affect or at least no change?

Thanks

I've never heard anybody claim that moonlights in an aquarium have any benefit at all.

If I'm not mistaken, the effects of the moon on corals is more about tidal pull (gravity) than about light. And all that does it get coral to spawn. What kind of "gains" are you looking for?

That's what I was wondering. They feel a bit hokey. I asked because I never use the moon lights that came with my fixture.

I get the we are trying to replicate the sea and included in that effort is the moon and it's phases - but those little blue lights feel gimmicky.

thanks for the input

There is zero photosynthetic benefit to moon lighting when properly setup. If the moonlight pattern follows the natural lunar cycle in your geographic then there may be a spawning benefit to having them when it comes to fish or corals that spawn based on the lunar cycles because the lunar intensity will follow the gravitational changes that occur during the lunar cycle. I say may because I am not aware of any scientific studies that have been done on synthetic lunar lighting. That said, some people add blue lights to their tank and run them at night and call them lunar lights and run them every night. In those cases, they would have no benefit whatsoever and may be even counter productive if the lighting is too intense as it could disrupt the natural photosynthesis cycle in corals.
