My hippo tang really is a "hippo", she needs to get on a diet.

She is an eater & is keeping busy still arranging frags in my tank. I keep a half dozen "toys" (Old dead frags she killed from stuffing in the sand) on the sandbed to let her play with. You can see a few toys in the sandbed here.

I had to anchor this scripps stag with another large base rock I have with an old dead acro on it.

Marcye gets the craziest fish through her place.

Yeah, see's a fatty.

I wish I could be a better angle so you can see the width of this girl. She hasn't been in my tank too long.

Here are a couple others, but with actinics on they are almost washed out.

Nice fat fish. I'm having issues keeping my naso fat. He is getting thin and I feed him a nice amount every day with a wide variety. He eats like a pig too.

You wanna see Fat - just wait until I can get Fat Albert to sit still for a picture.......
I'll show you what Phat really means

Thanks again Marcye - I still can't get over how cool Fat Albert is.....

Anyone have any ideas how to fatten a naso tang up? He's doign well but he is looking fairly thin. I alternate between frozen and formula 2 flake each day and feed nori every day.

Does the naso get a chance to eat some meaty stuff too? Their primary diet should be veggies but I'd think with a few nips of mysis there may be a little protien and or fat that would get stowed away (and yet they sure know how to poop so who knows! just always feed veggies first)

On the "Mooooo" topic I heard if you dress up from head to toe as a cow this Friday and go to chikfila you get a free combo meal :)

Wow, Chad...she's looking a lot like Cyndi around the middle these days! I guess I need to stop showing them this video:

All my tangs are very fat and happy. I feed them Ocean Nutrition Forumla 2 frozen every night and Julian Sprungs Sea Veggies (they love the purple best, then green and no one will eat the red...so don't even bother buying it) every morning. I always feed the veggies first so the herbivores can fill up on that. Cyndi gets very little meat. I also add Kent Zoe Marine and Garlic to their food. The Zoe Marine is vitamins, spiralina and ammino acids and since I've been using this food mix all the fish are doing very well. Cham's tang and Fat Albert started on this diet as well.

You know its so late i totally forgot aboutt he goodies to add to food. That stuff is like.. THE coolest stuff. My fish just got it a few weeks ago (before just garlic, now with zoe) and holy cow they go nuts.

Even my cleaner shrimp spin around and try to find food even more frantically if it were possible. I bet that will help a lot - and surprisingly you can even add zoe straight to your tank like you might phyto and stuff . I plan on experimenting with it and some corals since its liquid and so small

WOW, that video is AMAZING! It looks like he really trained that fish. Unbelieveable

My hippo is still on the same diet as marcye was giving it. I feed Julian Sprungs purple nori first and mysis after that. I do use Zoe, Garlic & Selcon like once or twice a week. I used to use it every day for a long time.

I can't say she doesn't eat mysis though. I put a nice size thawed piece of it in there everyday and she gets alot of it. I also like to alternate with frozen formula 2 a home made blend of ocotopus, clams, squid & mussels thats been bleneded up. Maybe once a month I will put in some pellets or flakes as a junk food treat.

But 90% of the time its the Julian Sprungs & mysis

Lots of Spectrum large pellets?

I don't put to much pellets in my tank, maybe once a month or so

Cham, can you get a pic or two of him playing with one of his toys?

How about a video? I should take pictures though, would make a great avatar. Its sometimes difficult because she wont do it if she can see me.

The frag she is playing with in this video is the exact same frag you can see in the background of the very first picture posted in this thread. You can see some of the damaged tissue and how I had to put a big ball of epoxy around the base of it to keep her from pulling it off.

I am very exicted this morning. After some time thinking about how to do it and a number of tries that didn't work, my tank went from a daily PH swing of .3 to yesterdays total swing of .07

Hopefully I can keep that up.

I don't think flake food is really bulky enough for a fish this size. I would maybe use it on occasion, but concentrate more towards the frozen. Where did you get the fish & how long have you had it? There are other underlying pathogens/diseases/parasites that can cause a fish to lose weight even though it is eating. If the fish was kept in copper too long for example, irreparable damage to the internal organs could have occured.
I just had a midas blenny die recently. Even though she ate, she kept getting thinner until her ribs were poking out. When she died I put her little body in fresh water to see if maybe she had flukes or something. Two worms longer than her body were released. I suspect they were consuming all of her nutrition. There is a pellet on the market, I think Marcye has used it. It does kill some internal parasites...might be worth a try.
That is one beautiful fat hippo tang Chad!:) That is funny how he messes with your frags & you have to give him 'toys' I wonder if he would play with brightly colored objects that actually are toys? Like little green army men..

I got the naso locally about 4 months ago. I have a mush of food that I made with alot of vitamins, selcon, squid, and you name it, ,it's there. I make a big bunch of the formula 2 and he gobbles the whole thing so he doesn't have to chase it. I'll feed him till he is full. Also, the mysis, I do supplement with selcon and occasionally garlic. I'll try some zoe and go back to my old mix. I thought the P.E. mysis was good to feed so I was sticking to that.

PE Mysis is an excellent food for carnivores and omnivores. But feeding that to an herbivore is like feeding meet to a rabbit. They can't derive the proper nutrition from it and just keep getting thinner and thinner, no matter how much they eat. Cyanide, internal parasites, and others, as noted above can also have negative affects. It is believed that garlic helps fight off many internal parasites as well.

hey jay24k with my tangs and i am a tang freak i feed nori and romaine to them everyday. My tangs are huge. Some people have things to say about romaine, but my naso was from a fellow reefer on here who only feed him romaine for over two years. I have had him a year and a half and he is as fat as they come, buy also as beautiful as they come. Maybe try the romaine along with his nori. just an idea.

In addition to Sprungs Purple Seaweed, I feed Spirulina and Marine HyPro Duraflake.
I soak the flakes (not small flakes actually discs about the size of a pencil eraser) with Selcon just about every day, and every few days use Zoe and Garlic Extreme.

Our fish love it.
We got a tiny little Lawnmower Blennie from SITC a few months ago, it's huge now! Almost 5" horns to tail

Which reminds me I need to get some more Purple Veggies - I'm almost out.........

Didn't really get my PH up, I have it running right at 8.0

The problem was I run Kalk in my ATO. My tank started using more than kalk could handle so I am now dosing two part in additiion to kalk. But since most of my evaporation is during the day with the main lights on I was getting a high ph during the day and going pretty low at night.

I reveresed when the kalk doses, put an aqua lifter pump on my ATO and plugged that in to a timer. As soon as lights go out my sump is already an inch or two low and the pump kicks on. Since I dont want it dosing all the kalk at one time I put an inline valve so that I can control the drip rate. I do have a float switch that will turn the pump off once it reaches a certian level but I would like to fine tune it so that the drip runs the entire night giving me the PH stability I need.

Still working on it but so far I have been keeping a pretty low swing. The two part pump runs 24/7
