Hello,
I would like to start off this post by introducing my intention to this thread. My intention is to discuss with other current owners of idols, past owners of idols or anyone that may share the same interest or have input on these beautiful fish; sharing their experiences, successes and or failures with these fish.
That being said, I run a 180g reef aquarium with 40gallon Sump. Included in my stocking list is one beautiful Moorish Idol (who as of so far, has been reef safe!). I've had this idol for 3 months (not long, i know), but since having added this fish he/she had been nothing but what i consider my best purchase since beginning my reef keeping a year ago. He/She had by far been my most personable fish, meeting me at the front of the tank each morning, always searching for food, and pairing up with an unlikely friend, my Pacific Sailfin Tang; the pair of which are inseparable.
My Idol in question, readily accepts all varieties of food included in my feeding regime, which include: New Life Spectrum Medium pellet food, Green & Red Nori (Enriched with Garlic, Selcon and Omega nutrients), Banana, Mysis shrimp, Clams, Muscles, Oysters and Scallops.
All thing being said, I would love to hear your experiences with these amazing fish and questions you may have, And at this, I leave you with a couple questions I've myself pondered about upon reading various articles concerning idols.
1) I've read that because of often mysterious causes, which may or may not be attributed to dietary needs or other needs, that long term success with idols is very hard. Therefore, I'm wondering what do you feed your idols? What do you recommend feeding to idols assuming they will accept the food and what more could I add in my feeding regime to add more variety and cover more nutritional value as these fish may find in their natural surroundings?
2) I've read various articles stating that Idol's would appear to do better in pairs or groups in captivity, and that this is almost a 100% must for long term success. Since reading this, I've began questioning whether to purchase a second Idol from the same LFS. Would you suggest adding a second?
3) If you have kept Idol's as a pair, what was your experience? Was there any aggression among them? And, lastly, how was your success keeping them as a pair (Are they still living? If not, how long did they live as opposed to others who have kept them in single's?)
