Moorish Idol

I feel like I keep explaining myself to people here. I do read I have done research. I came on this forum to ask questions about the things I own and the things I would one day like to own. Not be judged for because people don't know my full situation. Age has nothing to do with this and it's kinda pathetic that it's being brought up. Again you don't know my situation, you don't know my knowledge on fish keeping. Sorry I'm not an expert on everything like most people are on here cause they read what LiveAquaria says. You don't know me so what makes you think you can belittle me. Would you listen to someone that posts negative things cause you simply ask what a moorish idol eats? I'm not asking what you think about me putting it in a 55 gallon tank. Cause honestly when it comes to that your opinion means nothing to me cause that's not what I'm asking.

I appriciate the help but if you're just gonna judge me and my fishtank I think it's just better you don't put a comment at all. And I am reading what people say. But when negative nancy comes along I don't have the patience for it.

I agree with what you said here. I am thinking about getting a morish idol as well, and i said that, and got jumped on. I wish people were more informative on here instead of bashing so much based off of here-say from other websites. good luck with the idol! can't wait to get mine.

I understand where you are coming from, and I think most do.

The thing is that when you ask a specific question, it will be answered then some. The "then some" ranges greatly, but usually goes along with providing good husbandry for the organism in question. People suggesting that a bigger tank needs to be provided are not belittling you, nor are they judging you. They are simply informing you that the tank you have is not going to be the ideal tank long term for the fish that you have currently. Whether they go into a bigger tank or not is up to you, but the RC community looks to keep these animals in the best conditions possible and there posts reflect that.

No one is judging you, at least I am not! I’m giving my opinion, which is fine if you don’t agree with it. Live aquaria comment is crazy yea they are a good judge but my knowledge on these fish is deeper than that, but that’s neither here nor there. Maybe some people do jump on you on here because a lot of people here have TONS of experience, and in their experience are trying to tell you that you are making a mistake keeping the fish you are. The point isn’t to judge you its to inform you, and to explain to you why its wrong to keep those fish. I would suggest you read more then live aquaria and get more knowledgeable then myself and everyone in here and when you will do you will see the point people are trying to make. So my question to you is, what have you found in your research of these fish and do you disagree with the comments that were made?

People on here are plenty helpful. The problem is attitudes like yours. People ask questions and when they get answers they don't want to hear or don't like they do it anyways. So a thousand people can tell you not to get morish idol but you'll do it anyways. You'll end up killing it like 97/100 of people do to them. It's not a knock on yours or anyone's ability to keep a fish, It's just the nature of the beast when it comes to this fish. The same can be said for Blue Ribbon Eels, Orange Spotted File Fish and several others. If this guy really cared for the fish and wantes it to thrive it would be in a bigger tank, simple as that. Keeping a morish idol for 6-12 months and getting it to eat is not successful. This fish has been in the game for a long time and studied by many well-known renowned people and PHD studies, we know this fish well enough to simply say don't try it.

yes you are judging because i never asked for your opinion. i made this thread for food not for someone to comment what size tank hes in. all youve caused me is aggravation and i dont have to explain my knowledge to you or anyone.

If you don't want people to talk about your tank whats in it and size don't post on the site. But again everyone on here can't be wrong about the situation good luck I hope for the fish sake it all works out and you realize your error before you kill some really beautiful fish.

55g... Moorish idol... What do I feed... Tangs... "I know what I'm doing, I'm not new at this"...
And the forever ill-advised impulse buy...

This thread has noob written all over it...

I fail to see how posting an opinion on tank size means you are being judged... Also failing to see how the OP specified that you were ONLY asking about food.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or tips to keeping this beautiful fish healthy?

Mine is over 4 years old now, and has never had sponge. It mostly eats NLS pellets.

However, in the last few weeks I have noticed it getting thinner and thinner. It still seems to eat, but is losing weight. I think it is due to my French Angel, who is becoming quite the bully. I will probably take the French out of the tank this weekend, and hope my Idol will gain back the weight he has lost.

Took the French out of the tank on Saturday. Now operation fatten the Idol back up commences.

Again, NLS pellets have good for me, and also Nori or some other greens are important for his streamer growth (and probably health in general).

I do agree with the others that a large tank is probably important for the Idol. Mine is 240 gallons and 8 feet long, and I definitely feel that is a part of the success I have had so far. Also, feed often, Idols don't have much capacity to store food. Good luck.

Since when is an idol considered a tang. At least the fish store I go to doesn't classify them as tangs. I feed my tang seaweed and mysis and I've had him or about a year since he was like 2 inches big. So I do know what to feed tangs. The idol eats the seaweed and the mysis. All I wanted to know if there were other things that I could sub for or something else I should get him.

I'm done arguing with people on here. Honestly it's not worth it. I know that tank is too small and that why I got a bigger tank for this reason.

Honestly I just feel like I don't need to explain myself but apparently that's not the case here. All the help is appreciated but some respect without the bashing would help. Cause no one knows anything about me and would YOU like it if people starting disrespecting you?

You know what. Sorry for getting nasty with you. I know you are trying to help and it also doesn't help that I have a short fuse. I just felt like you kept attacking me. If I disrespected you in any way I'm sorry. I just don't want any issues with anyone.

I do know the risks of getting this is and I wish my bigger tank would be done cycling by now. Once it is he goes right over.

Thanks again for your concern and again I apologize for being a little nasty.

Moorish Idols are in a class all by themselves. They are somewhat related to tangs, so many people think the way to treat them may be how you treat a tang for best results.

I don't necessarily think you are being bashed, at least I am not trying to bash you. I am trying to tell you what has worked for me after having this fish for 4 years, and after keeping salt water fish in general for 39 years.

Many people feel that a Moorish Idol should not be attempted by anyone for any reason due to their dismal track record, but if you are going to attempt one, you should give it the best of all circumstances so that you may have the best chance at success. So many of these comments stem from that thought process.

I do have actual experience keeping this fish, and while I wouldn't consider myself to have hit a home-run yet, I do feel that I have acheived a measure of success in keeping an Idol alive for 4 years. But I will say that it has the highest priority in my tank, which is why the French was taken out when I felt like it was adversely affecting the health of the Idol.

Well said, people on here should stay on topic. Even if there is something else wrong. You say that you know what you are doing and I trust that. People should just stay on topic unless it is pure torture of this fish, which if you are going to put it in that 240, your not torturing it at all. Good luck!

I used to have one he would eat pellets, seaweed, and mysis but suddenly for no reason quit eating and never made it to my display tank. He didnt make it past my quarantine tank period. I belive I had him for about 2-3 months .

There is a Moorish idol thread on her that is very informative though you should try that one... some guys were going into the ocean and picking up sponges for it. I kow some of the guys had their moorish for about 3-5 years. .. so im assuming sponge played a major role in the life span since its their main course in the wild.
