Moorish Idol

Hello to all! I just wanted to be a proud father. I have owned my Moorish Idol for about three months and wanted to ask if there are any others out there who have one. My tank is a fish only tank and I feed it about 9 different types of foods. What do you feed your moorish or see it eat? I will post picks once I return home.

Yeah, I'd love to see some pics. I heard those are difficult fish to keep...what's your secret?

Wish I dared to try one.:spin3:

I feed my three year old, sponge that I collect, bananas, clams, nori, live worms, avacado, mysis, plankton and amphipods which I also collect.
Good luck.

Hello there Chevy

I have been keeping mine I know for only three months. I have been very careful to try and feed it a variety of foods. It's truly my baby. I have been feeding it selcon soaked nori, formula two flake, soft tablets, h2o wafers, spectrum pellets, mysid shrimp, frozen krill, small amounts of clam, life line green, angel and butterfly formula, formual one, spirulina formula, and its personal favorite is TONS of squid. I have never heard of feeding fish avocado. I would be very interested in hearing how you feed your fish these different foods? It sounds as though you have been the one of the more successful moorish idol owners Paul B and would love to hear of your typical feeding regiment. I have read as much as I can on these fish and have found that most of the key to these fish is diversified food sources. I don't have the luxury of living close to the oceon so I can't get really fresh food, but I try my best to get everything I can frozen instead of dried. Any ideas for those who don't live near the ocean on how to get more sponge in there diet since they eat lots of it in the wild.

Bbentler, it seems that your Idol has a pretty good diet now.
The only thing missing is sponge. Following them in the sea sponge is about the only thing I ever saw them eat but that may be because it kind of grows where Idols live and I never saw anything else eat it. Obviousely, Idols will eat anything, just like any other fish. I don't really know for certain if sponge is really needed to keep them alive and I don't know if the sponge I collect in NY is any good for them. I do know that he loves it but I love ice cream too.
The only other thing I do for my Idol is give him vitamin A or cod liver oil. We usually forget that fish usually eat other fish, complete whole fish not just fillets or in your case squid arms. The vitamin A in food fish (or squid) is concentrated in the liver.
We can't always get small live saltwater fish to feed our fish so I feed cod liver oil to my fish about once a week. To do this I either put a drop of cod liver oil in a little water where it floats, I place some flake food on it and it absorbs the vitamin A. I feed these flakes to the fish. The oil makes a little oil slick on the water which causes the skimmer to stop making foam for a couple of hours. I have been doing this for many years, probably over 40.
I don't do it every day because vitamin A (in humans anyway) is toxic in large quantities. The other way I feed it is to mash up some bananna and add a little cod liver oil. My Idol loves it as do most of my other fish. Avacado in small bite size pieces is also eaten although I can't guarantee that it is good for them.
To answer your question about sponge, there are some frozen foods that contain sponge but I think it is a very small amount of sponge if any.
Have a great day.
Paul

one more thing, I only feed my fish with this turkey baster looking thing. I would never just dump food in the tank. I want every piece eaten and some fish get different food.

Actually just today I am working on a new type of food for Idols and other fish but since I don't want anyone to try it (for fear that it may kill their fish) I will keep it quiet for now. Maybe after a month or so of trying it, if my fish don't croak, I will write about it.
