More Questions For People In The "Know"

Ok, been thinking about some stuff and wanted to get some info on it before I jumped in. First, should I be concerned much with my Iodine/Iodide levels with just live rock/fish/snails/hermit crabs? And if so, what is a good product to raise the levels. Another thing, is getting a UV sterilizer a good thing or not? I've heard pro's and con's about them and was wondering how many Reefers have them. Also, I have a maxijet 1200 powerhead that I turn on just when I add chemicals/invert food. When its running the fish act like the current is too much and stay low in the rockwork. Is this too much for my 75gal or should I not be concerned with how the fish act and run it constantly. Also, should I point the stream up or down towards the rockwork. Thanks again for all the info you guys can give me!

I never add iodine, never test for it and never worry about it.

UV...I don't use it but many do and there are few real issues with running one.

A single Maxi is not enough flow, water flow helps keep nutrients in suspension so the skimmer can get them. In a 75 with fish only I would use several Maxijets ans it also helps with oxygenating the water and allows for proper gas exchange. In your case I would point so the water surface ripples.

In my 125 I am running close to 9000 gph in water movement and my fish love to surf the currents.

Yeah 1 Maxi-Jet mod will really move some water.

I justed added one to my tank last week and wow It blows the SEIO 1500 away.

with no coral though, you could put like 4 modded mj mods and make it a fish work out center. that would be sweet.

plus they would then acctually feel like they are in the ocean.

i doubt that you would get much vertical growth on soft corals though.

Cool. Guess i'll add that to my large list of "to-do's" for the tank. Gonna start saving up for my MH retro kit and figure out how I can build a canopy for the thing.

sorry to hijack the thread, but i am going to anyway! I put together the maxijet mod (super easy, by the way), but i don't get the acrylic rod that is suposed to be used as a stopper... i drilled the hole, and put a little piece of it in, but it stops the propeller completely, reguardless of direction. ideas?

I don't use the stopper. If it spins the wrong way unplug it and plug it back in until it spins the right way.

Unfortunatly I made the rigid tubing just a mm to short, so it reverses it self after it has been on for a little while... :(

If i can't get the stopper thing to work, I will have to glue a tiny bit of acrylic on the end of the shaft...

mjpelikan - The only thing that I could think of that would cause the MJ to reverse directions, other than hitting the acrylic stopper. Is that you MJ may be having an intermittent loss of power. Once it starts and stays on it should never reverse directions.

Unless I really don't understand the problem with your pump?
