Morish Idol..the lesser evil or greater good??

That tank looks like it was set up fairly recently. How old is it?

You are going to have a difficult time keeping water quality up and the fish healthy with that kind of bioload in a 125 tank.

I will also be brutally honest, as you indicated you wished to be. A person should add a fish because they can provide the proper environment for it, not because they believe someone else will provide an inferior one.

Good save, glad he's eating especially NLS pellets! I'd watch out for aggression from the tangs, especially when they get bigger. Also I'd rearrange the rotisserie more to allow more caves and hiding spots, just to help aggression and the idol could feel safer. Goodluck.

Thanks for your input Brian, and yes critized or not i will continue to be honest and appreciate others RESPECTFUL honestly ;)

As mentioned in initial post tank is of rather new setup. Started about 3 months ago, however it was previoulsy set up and i used established LR and water. More or less the tank just changed locations to my house

I am aware of the erffort it will need to maintain good water quaility and i am prepaired to do water changes as often as needed. Hopefully my decent sized sump/refugium and good quality skimmer will keep that job minimized.

More constructive crit and questions like brians welcome. No bashing plz, have a women at home that like to do that often enough everytime more $$ gos into the tank. lol :frog:

hate to also rain a bit but I have a 125g as well and my friend you have way to many fish in there. I personally wouldn't keep any of those tangs in my tank. you will be very hard pressed to keep good water quality and fish aggression will only grow. That idol will not survive very long with those tangs.
I'd remove what you can part with.

Noted!

I am prepared to trade in or remove the 2 foxface if space or bioload becomes an issue. I believe the size of current fish will allow me to atleast enjoy them for a little while.

As for aggression, if infact it ever does happen, i am pretty hard pressed on deciding which tang to remove. I love all my tangs and think losing any of them will have a great impact on my tanks personality. However i can say this (as much as people probably wont like my choose) my sailfin will not be considered for removal unless ABSOLUTLY needed.

I will put some thought into it though, and thanks for the concern/advice. :hmm2:

Please don't wait until there is trouble until you remove some of the fish. At that point, it is usually too late. The limited amount of people that have had some success with moorish idols seemed to have larger tanks with low food competition.

I have an 8x3x3 tank, and I have 2 tangs (hepatus and sailfin) and one rabbitfish. I would love to add an achilles or another tang, but I just can't justify adding another larger fish.

As others have said, read the Primer for moorish idols. That is real-world experience.

While I think you did the right thing 'rescuing' this incredibly beautiful Idol, I agree with Brian that you should get a couple fish out of there in the very near term.

The Diatoms on your sand bed tell me that you have some unstable times coming with your water quality. I have had the most trouble in the 3-7 months after setting up a new tank. Just after the Diatoms disappear is when the troubles start, ime.

Things look really really good right now, but act quickly before the troubles start.

Good luck - that's really a great specimen

I'd consider trading or removing the foxface pair due to bioload - though they are beautiful.

You may find yourself in the same position I am in. I am very attached to my fish. As they grow, I have upgraded to bigger tanks, and expect to continue doing so.

+1
(The wife will LOVE this suggestion)

LOL yea right.... :fun4:

Just picked up an Eheim auto feeder and programmed it to feed 4 small portions a day. I work frequent 12 hours shifts so hopefully this little baby will hold the MI over with New life spectrum pellets until im home and brew up something yummy.

I've owned an MI for about 5 months now and the guy before me had him for 8. I've read what seems to be about 10 novels at this point :) He's doing great. If you have questions or need anything; feel free to shoot me a PM.

+1 to everyone saying that you need to downsize your bioload before it becomes a problem. Congrats on the MI, if it were me I would have done the same, but would let at least one, if not both, of my tangs go, even though they are both still small (about 3-4" each). Good luck, I hope you enjoy him for years to come.
