Most Annoying Sound

Salty Red

Some may be shocked to find out its not a screaming baby as made famous in Dumb and Dumber. I know this for a fact, I now have a 7 week old baby girl roommate.

I took out my overflow tube a couple weeks ago to fish out a pesky wrasse that decided to jump into my overflow to see if the grass was greener...it wasn't. Anyways, now the stupid thing is driving me nuts gurgling for hours on end. The kicker is, it doesn't do it all the time, only when it feels like it. It will be silent for a day and then gurgle for 3 hours and then stop. Before this it was running for a year silent. Any suggestions, or is there a way to maybe prime the tube so it doesn't annoy me anymore? I need help before my wife drowns me in the tank.

Thanks!

What style of overflow do you have? Does it have any adjustments?

Is the water level in the overflow box the same as it was before?

Could something have been knocked out of place or not sealed properly when it was put back together?

Same thing happened to me; I have a basement sump and my problem was that the water level in the sump was higher than the return line - didn't realize that the return had be above water level of the sump.

I should have specified alittle bit, let me pull the curtain back alittle further. It is a drilled "reef ready" tank. The water level in the corner over flow looks to be the same level but I may have knocked something out of adjustment.

The, we'll call it "sump in" line is below the water line and I did suspect that if I brought it up above the water level it would solve this but I dont want to add a new issue of splashing water. That sump in line hasn't changed which is why I am not a fan of changing it unless I absolutely have to because I know it can be silent. I suspected I might have to change this though.

Both of these are totally possible and it looks like I have a couple of roads to travel down tonight during the little ones cat naps. Thanks everyone I really appreciate the help.

What kind of overflow drain is it? A durso?

Most open channel drains have an airflow adjustment, either via an airline valve or just via a hole that is drilled a certain size. I'd try playing with that.

The line terminating below water level in the sump puts backpressure on the drain, which can cause air bubbles to accumulate and burp out. I am not convinced that's the issue here.

Did you change anything on your return line, i.e. adjust your return pump's flow rate or anything?

Ahh, well there is a small ~1/4" hole with a tube in it as a vent. i agree that i dont think the back pressure is the issue because I shortened the tube and yes it stopped the bulk of the gurgling however bubbles are still there. it has to be a height issue with the pipe itself cause that is the only variable that has changed. I will have to play with it some more later. darn babies need more attention than the fish, lol. thanks again!
