Most miserable reefing chore?

starting a siphon on a water change and taking a little drink as well...

Real easy way to start a siphon--avoids knocking over coral too. Take your siphon hose to your sink. Fill the hose with water (keep one end low in the sink). You don't have to get out every little air bubble. Put one thumb over each end of the hose and keep them there. Carry the hose to the tank. Put one end of the hose in the tank and stretch down and put one end in or over your bucket. Release both thumbs and you will have a siphon.

I think taking the whole skimmer off the back of the tank (since I have a HOB skimmer) and doing a thorough cleaning of the whole thing is my least favorite chore.

To start a siphon by sucking all you have to do is get the water over the highest point. Then gravity does the rest. You don't have to suck until you actuallt get water in your mouth.

Water testing! Every 2 weeks I do it and hate it. The parameters hardly ever change so I went to a monthly testing regime but felt too guilty and went back to bi-weekly.

I find WC's the easiest thing to do, my tank is near the back door & so far no plant casualties :-)

What I hate doing is scraping coraline off the glass, I always worry about removing the silicone, so I've a ton or coraline on the bottom edges as a result. Gonna get one of those tunze super magnet scrapers - maybe tomorrow.. anyone used them?

I'm curious why so many see GAC rinsing as a hassle.

What's wrong with rinsing under the tap in a sock?
That's what I've always done. I don't worry about the minute amounts of "bad stuff" from the tap water. I never bother using ro/di. Should I worry?

just putting my hands in the tank sucks, water everywhere, knocking corals around, getting bit by my fish, so i dont do any chores, lol

Yeah, thats always the plan. The problem is, it is the fastest and simplest (did not say the smartest) way to start a siphon especially if you have to start/stop several times such as when you are trying to suck your dang watchman goby out of the overflow and wind up with a mouthful of slurm from the bottom corners :)

testing. hate testing. I dont mind cleaning the skimmer cup every few days, changing the sock every few days, wiping the glass, water changes... but I hate testing.

+1, that or explaining to my wife why I spent 100 bucks on something :)

I actually enjoy testing because I always like to know what is going on in my tank; I am a little to fastidious with my water parameters I think. I test a lot. I hate cleaning glass and having a mess in the tank for a while, though.

''discocarps' idea is very good, I wish that I could do that but I have a lot of coral in the top of my tank so I know that I would break some. What works for me is to close my hand tightly around the end of the siphon hose and draw air through my hand. In other words, make my hand an extension of the hose.It works very well for me.
