Most sought after SPS?

cubuffs

What is the one sps coral that is a must have. It used to be the superman danae, and then the purple monster. What do you think the one is now, or will be soon?

i'd like to see corals starting to get props for size/maturity/health instead of people going ape**** over 1/2" nubs of something they hope to colorful and rare .... not really a direct answer to your question, but thats my .02c

i have a lot of the "name brand LE" corals .... after working out trades/deals to get them... it was kinda anticlimactic. now, instead of being amazed by a particular species.... i am more into size/health of corals and their placement in a beautiful aquascape. (something i hope my next tank set up will exemplify)

I think you've got it a little backwards cubuffs  the purple monsters' been a LE, "most wanted", whatever-you-want-to-call-it for years before the superman's came to market.

It's all so subjective I don't think there can be just one that's the most coveted. Since I've been in the hobby I've seen people go plain crazy for: PPE's, true blue zoos, Acan lords, micromussa, any number of LE SPS corals... I'll give you the most current "the pink lemonade" $300/frag on ebay :eek1:

With some SPS corals, and lots of zoas, I am reminded of the Beanie Baby or POG or Tickle Me Elmo fads. Some suckers would pay 2000$ for a Beanie Baby that was labled "rare". Not that there were less in exsistance, they were just in demand. For some reason, many people were willing to pay these ridiculously high prices, which fueled the fad. Eventually people came to thier senses and these fads died out. However, as long as there are people out there willing to pay, sellers will continue to charge out of control prices for something "rare".

well you can not compare beanie baby's to coral because you can always make more of them but with coral there may only be just a few of the kind. and there are vary hard to find and some grow vary slow. also if some one does not know what there are doing then the color will fade away. but in the end it is just up to you and what you like and keep it at that.

I buy whichever corals that pleases me visually whether it's sps or whatever. But the only sought coral I have in my tank is the superman danae which I got for a great deal, couldn't pass it up and colors are amazing!

^ I figured someone would bring that up. I'm not saying that there aren't rare corals (I won't get into how I feel about them being sold). I'm just saying that not all corals are rare but people will still charge "rare" coral prices for them. As long as people will pay, I guess.

well since no one has erally answered his ? i will give my guess. incredible hulk acro , but then again the list can go on forever.

I second that Zapata! Pink lemonade, Incredible hulk acro, The new Greg Hiler Blue Acro on exoticreefs, I still think the Palletta Blue's in high demand. The list could go on forever! I still see Purple monster nubs going fo a couple hundered, Maybe even the Tubs Blue & Pink prostrata. Seen enough? :)

I agree with KIP. I am more impressed with a brown stag that is 18" across than a 1" superman monti or pink lemonade

GARF Bonzai was popular not too long ago, along with the watermellon chalice that was purchased for $525 on Ebay about 6 months ago.

Some people like brown stuff :p lol. Id rather see a 16" P monster colony or an 18" encrusted rainbow monti. I gotta have some color in my tank. It's nice they can grow a brown 18" stag but would'nt it be 10x better if it were electric Blue? Same time and care involved:D . Just givin my 2c

i have a blue tipped bron stag that is a little large than a soccer ball. by far the most eye catching piece in my tank. ppl dont even notice the hulk or the rainbow montis or all the other LE and rare stuff. big corals are sweet, but big rare corals are sweeter :D

I gotta agree with Kip... I like to see large mature corals in a tank. I don't have much room to talk because mine or pretty much frags right now. I hope they will continue to grow well. Hopefully in another year or so I will have some nice sized corals to look at.

I completely agree. The only reason most of these corals are so expensive or rare is because the vast majority of collectors have no idea whatsoever of the value of colorful corals. Most just recognize your run-of-the-mill brown corals and, as a result, primarily only collect those. I think if we can provide more feedback to collectors, most of these 'limited edition' and 'craze' corals will be much more affordable, not to mention more common.

The one must have that most can agree on is the Standard ORA Blue Tort. Inexpensive, available and very beautiful. A 12" tort colony can take your breath away.

Its just amusing that theyre in high demand. I live near one of those guys, and honestly, he has a tough time getting hobbiests to buy, because his stuff is already all over the place. Market is saturated. We need more people to be like him and push corals out as quick and as economically as possible. That way theres less chance of permanently losing things. It helps everyone.

It seems that consistently for the past 2-3 years, the true thin-branched A. echinata has been the most inquired and sought after piece.

Hell, it was so desired, that the echinata tag was being stuck on anything bottlebrushed last year. I wouldn't be surprised if less than 5% of the echinata pics posted here were actually the real thing.
