Moving tanks to rid crypt

Hello everyone,

I am curious about coppersafe vs. cupramine on different fish. I am in the process of moving my 72 to a 150g. I have had crypt for well over a year and it effects every tang that I add regardless of Q. Once they were added to the DT they got it and either made it or not. I treat the DT with lots of different "reef safe" products like ruby, no sick fish and Herbtana and I don't think any of them have had any real effect. Currently I have a newly added hippo that is battling. Since I am moving tanks I figure this is a great time to rid the system of crypt. So I am moving all of my live rock, coral and other inverts to the 150 this week. Leave the whole thing for 6 weeks min. But I am wondering about my fish. List below. Any of these safe to move or should not be left in the 72 with one of the above? I am converting the 72 to a fish only so not concerned about what the copper will do to that system. Also keep in mind that the only fish currently with signs of crypt is the hippo. The black spot was added 4 weeks ago and battled through it and eveything else has been in the system for over a year.

Thanks!

Purple tang
Black spot tang
Hippo tang
Flame Angel
Cleaner wrasse (this dude eats EVERYTHING including algae sheets with the tangs)
2 scissor tail gobies
Mandarin goby (not sure what he would eat if left behind)
Diamond Goby
Eyelash blenny

If you want to get rid of crypt, you will have to treat all your fish... But I don't know how you will treat your mandarin without him starving to death. I have always wondered how to tread fish like that without killing them. I will watch this and see what the experts say.

If your mandarin eats prepared food it will make the task that much easier, they are hard to treat otherwise. To keep them fed you'll need to constantly introduce pods into the QT, as the pods won't live very long in a copper or hypo. Additionally, you'll need some sand for the Gobies to burrow in, which will make keeping a therapeutic level of copper difficult.

My suggestion, do two different QT's, one bare bottomed treated with ionic copper for the tangs, angel, and wrasse, and another with sand and rock undergoing hypo for the remaining fish.

From what I understand Mandarins cannot get ich - I'm the "experts" will correct me if I'm wrong.

Their thick slime coat gives them a lot of protection. I doubt that they are totally immune, especially when there is a real outbreak---the gills don't have that slime coat. Regardless, I'm sure they could carry one of the non-swimming stages to another tank, even coral can.

Mandarins can, indeed, get ich. But as described above, their thick slime coat makes them very resistant to the parasite attaching much in the same way a tang's thin slime coat makes it very susceptable to ich.

Im no expert....Where have you read they can't?

There a fish right?

Right here.....

To quote:
"These fish don't get Ich as they secrete an oily substance on their bodies. Their skin type and the oils secreted make them extremely sensitive to many medications. What may heal one species will more than likely kill a mandarin. So if your other fish develop ich, the mandarin is not to be put in to quarantine. Which is fortunate because it would starve to death if you did, assuming the medication didn't kill it first."

WWM has quite a bit on this as well.

Maybe "highly resistant" to ich is a better term that "cannnot" get ich. It seems the slime coat they produce makes it difficult for the parasite to attach as it can on other fish. Anyway, any treatment that you would do in a qt will more than likely kill them as they do not handle ich remedies well.

Thanks everyone. Interesting info. I actually spent some time on WWM and have decided to change my approach and treat with CHLOROQUINE PHOSPHATE. Keeping all the fish in the Q and moved everything else to the DT to lay fallow for 6-7 weeks. As I understand it the CP will not effect the mandarin. We shall see.

The below thread and particularlly the two links I cited in my posts in this thread provide some excellent information about chlorquine and dosing protocal for the treatment of crypt from the leading authority on the subject.

Another treatment that you may want to consider is the tank transfer method. It should be safe for your mandarin and can be accomplished more quickly than other treatments, except it does require mutliple tanks and is labor intensive.
