hi all my family and I are possibly looking at moving to the Tampa area. I was wondering what it is like there for the reef community? I currently live in Illinois and only have a small 20 gallon reef but as soon as i can i want to go bigger. So, what is the pricing like down there for rock? tanks? livestock? Are there alot of places to go look and purchase these items. I still have not ever purchased anything as far as livestock on-line, i like being able to pick my own. Any help would be great ly appreciated.

Thanks, Alan

Alan, I lived in German Valley, IL (Near Freeport) for two years before moving here to the Tampa area. I can tell you this place is a haven for Reef keepers.
Where in Tampa are you moving?

A very reefing community here. Great people and better stores. Browse the Tampa Bay Reef Club forum here and you will see it is the biggest in the Southeast.

We are just in the beginning stages of looking but if the wifes job offer comes through we will be there in the next couple of months. We have a 7 year old daughter and i am looking for good schools for her sooo, we were told to look in the Lutz, Odessa,& Carrollwood areas. Are these good areas? Might even be in Tampa itself, still not 100 % sure. Any ideas from you guys?

The most fun will be moving my stuff there. I have a 32 head Frogspawn that i want to keep especially since my clown has hosted to it.

Greetings from a former resident of Oswego/Boulder Hill just "down the road" from you. It has been a long time since I checked out the reefing scene in the Aurora/Naperville area, but I can tell you that compared with what used to be there, you are in for a real treat here in Tampa! You have so many good LFS's in the Bay area, and the Tampa Bay Reef Club here is simply amazing (and unbelievably large in number given Tampa's population). You can purchase much of what you are looking for in setting up a larger system as well as coral frags/livestock from club members for a good price, and there are LFS's here that are very competitive with online prices. There are also many opportunities, both locally and down in the Keys, for collecting livestock. You also have a number of great public aquariums here (none quite as big as the Shedd, but very nice none the less): Florida Aquarium, Orlando's Sea World, St. Pete Pier Aquarium, Clearwater Aquarium, Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, as well as first class research going on at University of South Florida's Oceanographic Institute. Do look up the club when you get down here, and welcome aboard!

Man there is a lot of us from up there....I was born and raised in Villa Park. My dad had a shop in Naperville when I was younger... Great area here there are a handful of stores withing an hr of me that are awesome..Plus u wont miss the food to much there are a lot of pizza places and hot dog/beef places too! I know there are some really good school in Pinellas County also...Palm Harbor, Dunedin, that area...

I just moved to Odessa from Mississppi and I must say I am loving it here. The schools in odessa are awesome. The schools near me are Citrus Park Elementary, Walker Middle, and Sickles high school and they are all rated as A schools. I recently joined the TBRC and have found the people to be wonderful and have great advice. There are also multiple LFS in the area and there are a few that are top notch, the one I go to all the time is always helpful and answer all my newb questions.

Charter schools too, don't forget about those. Our daughter goes to one and its one of the best choices we've made.

You will enjoy the Tampa area.

Wesley Chapel is also a great up and coming area, Seven Oak's is a great community in Wesley Chapel and the school's are A rated from the Elementary up thru the High School.
Seven Oaks Elementary, Dr John Long Middle School and Wiregrass High School

Good luck with your move and welcome to the area

Cool deal. I live in Lutz/Odessa and love it. Nice and rural but still close to everything. And yes there are reefers and fish stores everywhere in this area

You will love the reefing community here, theres a great club that meets every month and we have frag auctions, ect ect ect ect. Some really great stores and a crap ton of cat pics.

As far as schooling for your daughter...good luck, florida has one of the worst education systems in the country. If i knew a good school, i'd recommend one, but i went to public school my whole student career.

also, be prepared to rip your hair out over florida drivers :P

4th or 5th largest in the country post-wise actually :D

Yes, the is the best area for a reefer to live! :fish1:

Some really great stores and a crap ton of cat pics.

Yes we have too many of both of these! :lolspin:

Oh, don't move to brandon or valrico btw, there are no good stores here. Move to tampa or oldsmar and you'll be set!

Then again maybe if we had more reefers in the brandon area we could get a new store here....

I've never lived anywhere but here :) I can tell you though the folks I've met in the TBRC and reefing community in general are all great people. Let me give you a word of advice on WHERE to move. Wherever you wife gets the job and has to work, try and be within 10 miles of it!!!! Traffic down here is crazy and you don't want your wife to have to drive 2 hours to and from work. My wife and I are spoiled in that we live less than 5 miles from both of our jobs and I wouldn't have it any other way. We just so happened to be zoned for some awesome schools for our daughter as well.
