The magazine is a Summit Media and BBC owned entity, I am sorry you have a problem with that, but it doesn't take anything away from the article. I absolutely agree that crap can and is produced worldwide and China does not have that market all to themselves. There are good products and bad products produced all over, but currently China is leading the way in copycat products because they just don't care. It is what it is and unfortunately people see a cheap price and don't care beyond that. This isn't the first or the last piece of equipment that will be duped.

The long lasting issue is what happens when companies no longer release their best innovations. If there is no way to at least protect them for a period of time, then there is no incentive to produce. We already have lost most of our manufacturing base, it is now in China. What we say with our purchases today sets the stage for what we will be able to buy tomorrow. No the world will not collapse because of this pump. :-)

Simon, instead of looking for reasons to justify it, do this instead. See if you can find a Chinese original design, of excellent quality with a warranty that is worth something backed up by a staff worldwide to handle any issues that may arise.

This is such a ridiculous statement that implies an anti-Chinese product bias. Maybe we should all go back to using knives/swords and have our military give up guns. The Chinese invented Gunpowder - pretty original design that has been "knocked off" the world over!

Gunpowder...warranted by whom, supported by what staff worldwide? So it sounds like you do not believe that China dupes anything and your argument for that is they invented gunpowder? I missed something.

Hey guys, come on, this is getting ridiculous! If we want to talk about pumps and compare and contrast the ones we started with, cool. But this is getting WAY off the beaten path. If you want to ...discuss... cars and knock offs, start a new thread in the lounge.

PLEASE!

Agreed, we really haven't achieved anything. People still have the right to make whatever equipment choices they want, for whatever reason they want.

Thanks Jack, see how easy it is to make friends... even ones with some fairly different opinions! Thanks, my friend.

BTW, did you see my Belize pics in the Lounge section? What a GREAT trip! We spent 3 hours on the inner reef (12 miles off shore) at Laughingbird Caye and Elaine, my wife, took about 250 underwater pics!

First of all you are correct about the magazine it is indeed not a knockoff. I should have read the fine print better.....my bad. The opening phrase "We all know the Chinese copy everything. Blatantly, to be very specific about it." naturally made me think that the BBC could not possibly have anything to do with this rubbish....but I was wrong.

Some of you are totally missing what people are having problems with here. You can argue that Jebao has made a pump that is a little too close to the Tunze. I do not believe it is but I am the first to admit that I do not own one and I might be wrong.

The moment you claim that China is producing a pump that is a little too close to Tunze you are out on some very thin and slippery ice. Due to corruption and, in some areas, an uneducated workforce there has been horrendous products coming from some Chinese companies. This still does not make it ok to slam something because it is Chinese or to make categorical statements about China. Unless you are certain beyond any doubt that 100% of Chinese people are represented by your statements this needs to be addressed case by case and without national stereotypes.

Well said nynick, I agree completely. Now, let's leave China out of the discussion and talk about the merits of the various pumps.

BTW, my WP40 has been in W1 mode at 18V almost 100% of the last 2+ months and has run flawlessly other than the night mode sensor needing a bit of light to work properly (it seems crazy to me that it needs light at night).

I saw the pics Ron, put down the Bloody Mary and finish uploading them, I know you have a lot more. :D

We did 90 minutes, stopped for lunch and then did an other 90 minutes. For one small island it has one he!! of a lot of nice coral. The lee side of the island was dead calm, shallow (4-10' deep) even 250 yards off the beach and nice coral heads everywhere. And even cooler, the fish didn't seem to be nearly as 'skittish' as the fish we snorkel with in the Florida Keys or even the Bahamas.
