Mr and Mrs Reef - 290g in wall build

I am traveling for work for the next 2 weeks, so Jeremy will be hard at work on the fish room! He has lots of plumbing and more electrical to do. We will be picking up a Neptune DOS tomorrow for our auto water changes from a friend of Jeremy's. Excited to have the DOS. I'm placing an order this week with BRS for all kinds of goodies including GFO, carbon, auto feeder for flakes/pellets, kalkwasser, ARM, reef chili, much much more. Can't wait to get it! We're so close I can taste it. Getting the rocks in was a huge step. We have water mixing in brute trash cans now. It'll be a bit before we have enough to fill this bad boy with!

Warning, lots of pictures [emoji16]. Jeremy has made a ton of progress on the fish room in the last couple of days!! He's working hard while I'm on the road. He always seems to get more done when I'm not there, must be my nagging slows him down usually. Haha.

Well, bryopsis reared its ugly head in our fallow 40g. Brought it in on a frag that I didn't QT or see signs of algae on it. Thankfully it spread to the frag rack only. Rather than battling it... I cute that section out of the rack. This setup is entirely temporary until the 290 and frag tank are ready. Hope that's the last of it!

Did water testing today to find some issues. When I have the bypass gate valve open, water flows through. As soon as I closed it and tried to run water through the UV, the pump started working hard and water won't push through. There was a small leak in the UV plumbing that was allowing air in. Shouldn't be enough to impact flow that much though. Any ideas? See video for walk through of plumbing and flow. https://vimeo.com/153317740

Perhaps the extra bends and turns of the UV unit plus all the extra plumbing associated with the unit exceeds the pump's maximum head capacity (?).

Here are the sump plans we are thinking of. See anything that doesn't look right? Anything we're missing?

Help please!

I think the only thing i'd change is location of the UV... considering the flow rate of your pumps i'd want mine on a much slower flow rate to create more contact time inside the UV

We were hoping this isn't the case. Due to the leak, couldn't turn the pump all of the way up, but when we ramped it up as much as we could, it still wouldn't push through. Pump is rated for 21' head pressure.

That's my fear as well. "To much for the pump". There is 7 90s alone in the uv. I have an old iwaki 70 might be running it off just that. We wanted the efficiency of the ecotech pump.

The uv has a 1600 gph flow rating spec.

We're thinking we will run another pump for the UV. Sucks. We wanted Vectras for the efficiency. We do have an Iwaki 70 and 100. Sounds like we'll be hooking up the 70 to run UV. We don't plan i'm running the UV all of the time, only for a couple of weeks after new additions come out of QT. Not sure if that's right or not.

I agree with dave... if you're quarantining everything it makes sense to put the UV on the QT... catch it before you move livestock to the DT

Ok! Debate resolved. Lots of thinking and going back and forth. Even headed to the brewery so we could sit and chat and focus only on the UV. (Good excuse for some good beer [emoji846]).

We are going to get another Vectra M1 to run the UV for the DT all of the time. We'll be mounting the UV at ground level rather than where we had it.

For QT's, that's the next purchase once we are up and running - UV for each QT. do you all run UV, all of the time? QT only?

Ich update:

Bad news. A month ago I missed something during TTM and Ich showed its ugly head yesterday. Positive is a) 40g breeder is still fallow, so no contamination there and b) thankfully 290 DT isn't cycled yet because the current fish would've been in it!

Started TTM today again. Took QT into a separate room, as last time they were in the same room as the DT with Ich, possible aerosol transfer. This time Using every absolute precaution possible, I'm pretty darn frustrated and disappointed.

(Sorry for so much purple/blue. Phone pics, can't figure out how to "dial it down")

Putting the fish under this light really made the Ich pop. Glad we caught it now.

Setup and ready!

Jeremy setup both QTs for the fish room so they have overflow to the drains. The QTs will be receiving our "waste water" from automatic water changes throughout the day. If we have something in DT we don't want in QTs, we can bypass QTs and run straight to the drain, then fill QTs with fresh SW.

This pic shows the valve to empty the QT and overflow both drilled in the bottom of each QT.

How do you like your lifereef sump? I'm planning to buy that same model you have.

So far, we love it. Although it's only been wet for testing... [emoji38]. Will definitely keep you updated. I'm stoked for the lifereef skimmer we have as well. Jeff is absolutely awesome to work with!

Very nice!

How you like the Vestra Pump?

Thanks! We have the M1 the skimmer, L1 for return pump. We are purchasing another M1 to run the UV. Just in testing - love the pump.... QUIET!! Can't even emphasize how quiet. And they're so small. We will keep you updated once it's up and running. Should be very very very soon!

We have the UV mounted in the new location and the new Vectra M1 ordered to run it. It should be here Wednesday.

Fish are currently on their second transfer of TTM to battle this darn Ich.

Oh gosh! You guys are WELL overdue for an update. We are fully up and running and cycling, working on Apex programming to get AWC's ready for after cycling. Jeremy made some awesome hanging mechanisms for the Radion xr30w's, pics to come!

Back in December the first round of TTM somehow got contaminated during. We did a second round and everyone has been doing great. Fish are anxiously awaiting the 290 to be ready.

We got the tunze scraper for the acrylic, makes me worried it's going to scratch the panes, seems like it would, but lots swear by it.

Will update with lots of pictures this weekend!
