Mr. Cena's 800 gallon Reef Tank

I have built hundreds of wet drys and sumps for fish stores and as long as you put the gasket with the flange it should be fine. Another reason you might have a leak is if your hole is too big for the bulkhead you will not get a tight seal. As well as any type of chip around the hole that was drilled this can cause a small leak as well.

Dyraxe, I have to disagree with you on this. I just set up 1000 gallon system and thought the same thing. But with the larger bulkheads you need to have the gasket on the water side/inside. I had several of these leak and as soon as I placed the gasket on the other side, no more leaks. This is a great thread. Keep up the great work.

The plumbing was easy compared to the time and effort the rock work is taking.

CONGRATS thats sweet....how much fun was the plumbing for that huge tank...i know its killing me on mine lol.

The plumbing was not simple but when you compare it to the time and effort on the rock work the rocks were a pain. The plumbing was done in a day or two and the rock work took 4 to 5 days.

I just got off the phone with Ray and the tank is full of water!!
It took 3 trips with about 250 gallons of water on each trip to fill the tank up. He said his Ford truck looked like the tires were going to burst from all the weight. He also says there is so much flow from all of the pumps that John's tank looks like a jacuzzi. The electronic ball valve is set to switch from left to right every 5 minutes and is working perfect. I will be stopping by to take more pictures of the tank in 2 days. I will see if I can take a video of the flow as well.

When it comes time to stocking the tank Ray plans on draining about 200 gallons out of the tank to help with water displacement. This will cut down on splashing and it will make it a little less deep.

Great observation and a good question;

That eggcrate is a special order item and you will not find it at Home Depot or Lowes. Lowes and Home Depot carry the 1/4 inch eggcrate. The eggcrate that was used is 3/4 inch so it is a lot thicker and more heavy duty.

This is a really exciting build. Nice work. How does the eggcrate hold up under all that weight?

i hope that with all the climbing in and out of the tank and all the work going on inside it that it wasnt scratched up. that would be a major disappointment

Would you mind posting a URL or supplier for the 3/4" egg crate? I have been wanting larger egg crate for some projects I am working on (not hanging rock like you are) and I have yet to find a source for it.

TIA!

Any possibility of a pic with John with the tank in the future?

As for stocking the tank it will have a bit of everything in it. LPS SPS mushrooms and much much more. Once they decide on what to get I will post a list of all that is going into the tank. I would expect a lot of shopping to get some really cool corals for this project. I can not wait!
