I usually use good ole spit on my O rings but Lunch's suggestion of silicone grease is a good one Silicone grease also comes in handy for keeping fragging tools from rusting etc.....so you can use it for other things as well.

Very good to know, thanks for the tip. My grandfather will be happy to know that his long tweezers will only be a little rusted.

Do I just pick the stuff up at home depot?

I have been checking out everyones silenters. I have a question. Has anyone every broke there beckett housing or needle valve with one of those enlarged air intakes?

I just purchased a MR2 skimmer, with a PCX40. I am joined the MRC club Anyways I would appreciate greatly some guidiance on how to install and tweak out all the bug. I probably wont be getting it ready for awhile, because I am still look for a sump that will fulfill my neeeds. Other than that I pretty much got everything else.

acrylic is strong, but I would advice to put it on top of the cup or keep it small, and be careful not to bump into it,

doc man I can't tell you how P.O.ed I am that I ever waisted money on my other skimmer.

Too bad i didnt know either about rc.
I think on the money i tossed away on stuff that was garbage i cringe.

on the weekend was trading some corals, and there was a guy there that was screwed with a mediocre setup for close to 10,000

Hey guys!


I need some feedback on a new sump I am planning. I think I am going to go acrylic. Easier to drill, lighter, etc. My old sump was a glass, 20g long. The new one will be in a similar vein, although a little taller.

1. I plan on moving the skimmer to the outside. How far away do I want the baffle away from the gate valve? I want it far enough so not to cause any backpressure, but yet, allows me more play room in the other areas of the sump.

2. Do I have to raise the skimmer any or can it sit on the floor with the sump.

3. Besides losing room inside the cabinet, any downside to going outboard with the skimmer?

4. What size bulkhead should I look for to connect the gate valve?

If any more details are needed for clarification, please ask away.

I swithched to a acrylic sump and i opted for 1 baffle about 12 inches away from the bulkhead and its 1.5 inches up off the bottom of the sump The sump is 3 feet long and i dont get any micro bubbles to the main tank. I also have a compartment for 3 media filters, and a compartment for liverock rubble to be used as extra filtration. I cant remember the size of the bulkheadsi think its 1.5 inches.
I am pretty sure you'll have to raise the skimmer to keep the water exiting the skimmer correctly.
I went way outside for my skimmer and made a seperate cabinet to house my skimmer tunze controllers and ca/rx and pump for the skimmer. I'll try to get a pic up soon.

I have had the same mr3 for about a 1.5 years....it has always worked pretty well

I have recently noticed a dramatic increase in performance though....and was wondering if anyone could explain why

I just moved to tank 2 weeks ago and as a result of circumstance, I had to raise the skimmer body about twice as high as it was before above the pump (circe 3 feet)

All of the valves were left in the same position, but once I fired the pump up (a pcx55), I had to open the gate even more. I had always run the water level about 4 inches from the bottom of the body union to get good production, but now, I only have to run the water level about 4 or 5 inches above the black box. It is foaming like crazy.

Nothing new was added to the tank.....it was basically transferred and put back together. It has been running this great skimmate production for about a week now. I thought it was great before, but I now have to emply a full collection container (of pretty dark stuff) every other day

Is it normal for the skimmer to overflow by just pouring a few cups of top off water in??

I run the skimmer pretty wet.

Yep mine does that. It adds backpressure to the draining water.
I spilled 2-3 gallons of watrer over a week ago.

Right now, I am battling microbubbles and there are so many causes of MB that it is hard to pinpoint one particular area. I do know that I made the baffles too low and I think my return pump is dragging air with the water. In addition, I have some more drilling to do for an auto top off. So, begrudingly, I decided to start back at the drawing board.

So the skimmer should be raised a bit? By how much?
