dsquared,
FWIW the 1" feed line is not optimal but works in my case(I plan on redoing all plumbing in a few months). I assume you have checked the beckett for obstructions etc.....How wet do you want to run the skimmer?

fishdoc11,
yea Iv'e cleaned the beckett numerous times. Tried skimmer out put above water line, below water line, with & without "T". TRied high & low water levels in skimmer. Tried twin becketts. You can see some set up pics in my gallery. Cup drain is not clogged or underwater. I have a spare PCX55 pump that I hav not tried.(maybe I should)

fishdoc11,
Wet or dry I don't care I just want some skimmate. It's a 75 gal. with a 30 gal. gravity fed sump. 90 pounds of liverock and 3 small fish fed once a day. I have no algae problems. I can keep SPS alive but growth & color are not good.

Does anyone have an MRC Kalkwasser Reactor? I just bought a used one. Not sure if it is working right or not. Is the long capsule (stirrer) that sits inside supposed to just "jiggle" or should it be "spinning around?"

Thanks for any info!

dsquared,
Sounds like you have tried a lot and to be honest it took me a few months to really learn how to use mine but it has allways skimmed well. You might try going back to one becket and try the other pcx55. I started a thread a while back about dual beckets and the pcx55 and it was stated that the skimmer worked better with just one beckett with that pump. I do know that I do all my adjusting with the air valve and turning it even 1/8 of a turn can be the difference between me emptying my autotopoff in the middle of the night and getting the 1 or 2 liters a day I like to get out of it. Once I get it adjusted I try to leave it there because if the performance changes it is usually due to the neck needing cleaning, a piece of valonia in the beckett or the cottonball needs to be replaced. Besides that I really don't know.
Chris

Thanks Hippie!
I am feeling really dumb right now... when I put water in it, i floats above the bottom of the ring and spins perfectly... another "duh" moment for me:-)!!!

fishdoc11,
The skimmer is running a single beckett now. Skimmer output is about 2 inches under sump water level with a "T" on the drain pipe. I'll put my other PCX55 on & give a try.
Thanks,
Dave

You are getting back pressure in side the skimmer ,the out put water needs to be higher then the sump water level to get the out put of then skimmer working like it should.

RGibson,
I have a coupler on the end of my out put pipe that isn't glued, so I can easily remove the coupler & it will be about 3/4 inch above water line. I'll do this when I swap out pumps. Should I use the "T" on the drain or should I cap it?
Dave
One other thing, my sump water level stays the same as the pump pick up is in a baffled area.

I am no MRC expert, but I would make one change at a time so you know what it was. Funny I am thinking of going from ASM to MRC. The grass is always greener I guess

First things first.. Get rid of the T and 90. Put the T right after the gate valve, then a 45 right after the T. Drain the water into your sump a a 45 degree angle. If possible, drain an inch ABOVE the waterline.

With this set up you are getting bubble lock and your level in skimmer is going up and down, making hard to keep a steady head.

:EDIT:: rgibson nailed it. I would go into the water at a 45. Mine is an inch or 2 below the waterline I I don't have any real issue.

Change the pipe first before you change the pump, like he said one thing at a time.

Steve Dohoney you will do much better with a MRC skimmer because you can all ways make a bigger if you want to at very little cost, AMS protein skimmer can not say this.On top of all that it takes very little service to keep it running. My first large skimmer was a AquaC EV180 which was change over to a MRC that should tell you some thing.

Andy of MRC reads this forum this would be a good one for him to answer.

Pump options

Pump options

I have a question about pumps for an MR3 with one injector. The website says Blue Line HD55 or HD70 but if I add an injector later on would the HD55 be enough and if The 70 is good for 2 injectors will it be to much for 1 injector. My plans were to order the MR3 with one injector and use HD70 Blue line pump then later down the road add the 2 injector. I don't want to have to by more pumps for the 2nd injector. Anyone have any ideas?

Info on my 120g My Thread

Put a valve on the out of the Blueline and if you need to cut the flow back for one injector you can and then you can open it up when you get the second.

Kinda what I was thinking.....But would the HD55 be enough for two injectors?.......uses 100 wattts less (lower elec. bills)

The 55 will run 1 injector but not 2.
