Hey all, I just scored a used MR2 with dual becketts and a Mag18 for $300.

I have an acrylic sump and I was wondering what size bulk head I will need? Will the mag18 do alright? I currently run an in sump skimmer.

PS. The guy sold, because he is going to get a bigger MR.

Oh also, I have never ran a skimmer outside the sump, and I was just wondering what to expect beofre it gets here.

I don't know how well the Mag 18 will work with dual injectors. It works 'ok' on a single injector, but don't think it'll perform well with 2. You really need a good pressure pump to drive the becketts properly.

As far as bulkhead size goes, 1" should be fine, you could even up it to 1.25" or 1.5" but really don't think it's necessary.

Sure, just take the one injector off and plug the hole.

I just picked up a PM sump for my tank. I have a single overflow on my 75G - the sump/refugium has dual intakes so I thought I would use one from my overflow and the other on the return from my MR2. I am going to drill the sump for the PCX-55HP pump. Can I drill from the top and just drop in a U going to the pump to the skimmer - or do I need to drill the side? I would prefer to just drill the top if it will work. I am going to attempt to attach I picture to give you an idea of what I am talking about. All input will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can do like you want on the 'up and over', but you'll want to upsize the pipe to 1.5" if you can. Apparently, the gen-x will loose quite a bit with 1" up and over.

Using the other one as your drain would work, provided the bulkhead is the same size as the drain from the skimmer (1.25" I think, might be 1.5"), but I would draing the skimmer into the second compartment as not to reskim the water you just skimmed.

Also, on the up and over you'll need to add a 'T' with a removable cap so you can prime the pump.

That sounds good - the bulkhead size is 1" and I was thinking about just having adapting the size down as it entered the sump - will that cause a problem?

Also - is there any special bit I should use to drill the acrylic - or will any bit the proper size work?

I was less concerned about reskiming the water than I was about creating micro-bubbles and increased flow through the middle refugium section. Am I off on that idea?

You'll want to run the same size pipe all the way to the pump. You don't want any restrictions. With an acrylic sump, I would probably just drill the sump wall for a bigger bulkhead. Doesn't look like you have alot of room to work with up top.

A regular hole saw should work fine, that's what I used on my skimmer which is acrylic.

There is swirley bubbles up until the quick release. From the quick release up to the top of the riser there are very fine bubbles.

NoSchwag what pump are you running on your skimmer?

I currently have a mag 24 on my mr2 and have never had bubbles that fine that far up the neck. I am going to change to a blueline 70 with 2 injectors on my mr2 with a 12" neck extension.

I am running a pcx55 straight in to the becket.

I think the carbon air filter helps a lot.

Mar i went from a mag18 to an iwaki 70rlt & that's when i realized pressure pumps where the way to go.

Hey everyone -

I recently picked up a MRC Nilsen Reactor, one of the older style with the Hanna Stirrer.

I'm having trouble getting it to stir. I have tried all speeds, and the best I can do is make the stir rod move a little bit.

Any ideas? Is there a trick to it?

Steve 68 do you have a photo of how your MR-2 looks as far as the connection of the pump and the becketts and air valves. I am going to use a similiar setup and the way yours looks from the video it is nice and clean.

from the pump i have a true union like so the pipe above is how i do my water changes
it has nothing to do with the pump but it blocks the other true union going to the pump.

I just bought a mr-1 with a mag 12. I hope it works as good as you all say they do. Might be getting a new tank also, 155 bowfront.
