Curious about the new Recirc MRC skimmers. Anyone uprgrade(same size skimmer) from the stanard design to the recirc model? How much better does it perform?

I have the recirculating MR2R and a good friend of mine has the MR2.

It is obviously better, but then the price is also more. I don't regret paying the extra for the Recirculating.

Hope this helps.

Hmmmm so you think yours is better huh? My sps grow faster, and have more color, but your skimmer does have more crud in it. I guess your tank is just more dirty. LOL!

Hehe David... You should probably just answer the question directly and leave out our competitive nature... Everyone knows my corals are better...

So answer the simple questions... Take price out of it would you rather my skimmer or yours?

Mr James-

I was actually told to stay away; from what I understand the media's not only dirty, requiring a healthy pre-wash, but also not pure, meaning as it dissolves, who knows what you're gonna get.

Got that from an online vendor, and probably the only guy worth anything at my LFS... It's cheaper, but it's a poorer product...

I own an MRC Skimmer, but have a (Let me have it, I know) different brand skimmer; I just run ARM (LFS Stocks ARM, and the Gen-X stuff). I will, next time, buy the Schuran or Knopp stuff; it's still cheap when you look at it....

*sighs*

Yet again more problems with this skimmer. This time, it almost cost me alot of money. I was filling up my sump on my new tank today and I leave it fill up for a few hours and come back to a HUGE puddle of water all over my hardwood floor.

The MRC was leaking from the two injector bulkheads. *shakes head* Went to tighten them up, and of course there are no tightening nuts. They were just glued into place. So I am resorted to using plumbing goop, which didnt really work that well and silicone to try and keep them from leaking.

Im giving this skimmer a ton of chances and so far its done nothing but let me down.

You need to call andy at MRC to get a new skimmer box.

I dont want to sound cheap, but is it free? *lol* I mean, I don't want to put any more money into this thing after all these problems.

Sellout-

What happened?!?!? I've seriously never heard of one of these things leaking; was it dropped or something? The box on my MR-2 is a tank! I can't imagine it leaking down there....

If you're in to saving some money; try a little Weld-On 16; you might be able to repair it yourself, assuming you can get the RTV off of the acrylic....

My MR-2 had a small leak between the black box and the gate valve. I did not use Weld-On, rather, I used a two part marine grade epoxy from Lowes. No leaks.

I pretty much rigged it with silicone and Marine GOOP so it will not leak, but its NOT pretty and am quite upset with it. *shrug*

Guess there is no reselling it now. haha

I am going to start everythign up tonight and I guess Ill see if its working now.

Can someone please give a newb (me) some tips on adjusting an MR-2R. This is my first skimmer.
I have mine skimming, but I have to constantly adjust it. Seems like it either skims too much or not at all.
I've been adjusting the gate valve. I don't really understand what the air valves do.

What exactly is dry skimming and how much water should I be skimming out of my system each day?

Thanks, Jim

Hammbone:

I have the MR-2R.

Do you have yours in a sump or external? what pump are you using as teh feed and what pump for the reciruclation?

I suggest closing the air valves completely then adjust the gate valve till its about 4 inches above the box or 1 inch below the union. I then open my air valves a half turn each till the water level is where i want it. Real high if I want a wet skim... about 2 -3 inches from the top if I want a dry skim...

Let me know how you have yours setup and i shoud be able to help you further.

Brandon

Mine is external. I have a Mag 5 feeding it, and a Blue Line 55 HD recirculating it.

How does the dry skim work? What is dry skimming?

Thanks, Jim

Do you have a picture of how the drain drains back into you tank?

Is the Gate Valve on the skimmer above the water level in your sump and is the exit above or below the water level in the sump?

Dry skim or wet skim is a personal preference and depends on what you are drying to achieve... Basically a dry skim will produce a think dark dark brown/green skimmate where as a wet skimmate will look like tea water...

Hope this helps.

I always hear a lot about "wet" or "dry" skimmate. Does it matter which it is? Does dry skim take more out? Or is the personal prefrence just the way it looks and smells?
