MTC skimmer club!

Level 11

Pulling slightly more watts saying around 147 watts right now.

It's also pulling in the same amount of air as level 10 at around 24scfh

So, with the same air draw as level 10 and slightly higher energy draw it must be pushing through a bit more water. Which if its like level 10 vs 9 I might not see any improvement in skimmate production. This may have tapped out the stock 684 venturi with level 9 being optimal. We shall see.

I have had a MTC HSA1000 up and running for a few weeks now and it is doing great. I had a broken gate valve and Jeff took care of me. I currently have it skimming about 375 gallons with another 250 coming on line by end of year. I am running an Iwaki Md55rlt pump on the set up.

Darn I thought there was a level 12. Now I get to switch to the 784 but probably tomorrow night. Ran out of time to get that done tonight.

Level 11 being 100% now makes a lot more sense that its pulling so many watts. It's still pretty amazing to me it's near max watts at 0 head pushing through that venturi.

Averaged about 147watts

Production went down slightly probably from increased water flow reducing the contact time

Not quite 1.25 gallons. Around 5.5cups per day.

Holy Moly!

Just switched out venturis. Stock 684 with the 784. I totally understand now on the need for a pressure rated pump. The waveline I don't think is listed as pressure rated but the head height it's rated for puts it up there with them.

Level 8 with 784 mazzei

Around 22-24scfh! Bouncing between those lines

Right now killawatt says between 113-114 watts used.

I was not expecting level 8 on the 784 to pull just about as much air as full power level 11 with the 684. That is awesome.

Level 8 with 684 was pulling around 18scfh and 114 watts.

I'm to tired and distracted right now to think about what that's telling me but I'll come back to that.

Well, getting so many microbubbles now the bubble trap isn't keeping up. I could angle the air outlets inside the skimmer up more, I could throw a foam block between the baffles which I don't really want to do or I just did this quick

Its a large 7" 200 micron mesh sock. That did the trick. Look how thick that air is now all the way at the bottom compared to previous shots.

This is at least telling me the 784 is pulling as much air as level 11 with 684 and more water.

Thanks and thanks.

I have to reset the skimmer and clean out the collection cup and neck. Its produced very very little so need to make sure its adjusted right or its just to much for the body if the skimmer. Will see.

From your stats post, the waveline at level 9 was pulling 6 cups per day vs the 3 cups the mag 18 was pulling. So the waveline was pulling out an additional 3 cups that the mag was simply leaving behind?? Do you think the difference might become less over time as the stuff gradually gets pulled out? It seems like a big difference, what kind of impact do you imagine this having on your overall tank health and look as time goes by??

I don't think it will have a big impact other then what I can see which everything visually looks clearer. I don't think it will slow down unless I feed less. I feed a lot. And yes that's 3 cups per day in the tank more with the other setup and skimmer.

I have a couple of questions for you MTC MXV owners. I posted this as its own thread but didn't get any replies to my questions so it was suggested to me to post it here instead.

I'm working on my equipment plan for my new 75g tank. I was looking at getting a MTC MVX 26 for my skimmer and was thinking of powering it with a Waveline 4000 DC pump. I'm looking at it because of build quality and the ability to use it on a larger tank in the future. My first question is, will this skimmer be too much for a 75g? I couldn't find any suggested tank sizing on the manufacturer's website.

In looking at MTC's website it shows a 8"x13" foot print for just the skimmer.
How much space will it require in the sump to fit both the skimmer and pump? Based on the footprint of both the pump and skimmer and the fact that the skimmer is round, I'm figuring a sump compartment at least 9"x14". Are my calculations close?

The 26" would do well on a 75gallon. That sump space will be tight but might work. I've got a 15.5"x12.5" space and its got plenty of room.

He does build quality is top notch and you can easily add another tube to make it bigger.

As for pump I'd go with at least the dc 6000 and test different settings. I'd be tempted to get the 10000.

Thanks for the reply. So your thinking a 6000 for a pump! I was saying a 4000 based on their website saying a Magdrive 9.5 was the suggested pump and the 4000 was close in performance to the magdrive. I guess being that it is a DC pump, I could adjust it down if need be.

I can probably expand the sump compartment to 10"x 15" but if I go much bigger I won't be able to have a refugium section.

I'm glad you mentioned about the pump size. That would of sucked to get one that was too small. I see from your experiments with different pump combinations, that Waveline seems to give good results.

So what would you go with, a 6000 or a 10000?

It did great with the stock venturi. Its so hard to say which of those to go with. The 6000 is close to a mag18 in terms of flow and head height. You'd probably be happy with it. But the 10000 would be fun to try out. lol

I was not able to get very good production at all with level 8 and the 784 venturi. Lots of bubbles up top just popping right away not forming a very good foam head. Maybe just to much water flow. Need a taller body and neck. Got around 3 cups per day and averaged about 114watts.

Resetting to starting with level 8 tonight just to see. Not expecting anything different. Maybe I should go back to level 5 or something to reduce the flow.

Level 9 is pulling about the same amount of air as level 8. Around 22scfh. I ran boiling rodi water through just to make sure. I recall seeing just over 120 watts being pulled. Will check that tomorrow night.

How finicky is the skimmer in relation to water level? And how about noise?

I confirmed today from the sump manufacturer of the sump that I'm looking at, the skimmer compartment is 11"x14". I'm guessing that it not being much smaller than the 12.5" x 15.5" skimmer section you have, the skimmer and a Waveline 6000 would probably fit. I'm thinking that the 10000 with it's bigger chassis would probably not fit in the skimmer section.

It's not finicky to water depth at all. But the water still needs to stay constant. It's not as touchy to fluctuating water level as some but the level changing will still effect the pump some. The 6000 would probably be a good match.
