MTRC February Meeting Minutes

Well I think the point Bill was trying to put across Justin is 1. The February meeting to elect new BOD is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT meetings of the year(all members should try and make it)....2. the club is a means for its members to benefit, but with anything you want to be successful you get out what you put in and with that we all have to work on participation.

I am not saying that if you are not present you miss out on voting, but in the time I have been a member a majority of the meetings were lacking BOD, newer/enthusiastic members were the ones really doing alot of legwork to get things done. I am not totally discrediting the last board, but I am sure many would agree that there was alot of disorganization and personal agendas working against each other which made things really hard on some people.

I think most everybody's goals are the same it is just the journey in which people are not agreeing in how to get there.....One thing we have to be with so many members and a such vast distance of member cities is we have to be organized, plan ahead, and be somewhat efficient.

I agree with you Jennifer. I think that most of meetings only had about half the board there but then again we were a little short on people for the board. At leas this board is at full staff and ready to go You might not be saying if we missed a meeting we cant vote but that is whats being said. I had something that had been prepaid for over a month on the date of the meeting so i could not have been there even if i wanted to be and knew we were voting but that does not mean its not important to me. I attend most meetings that are within 45 minutes to an hour of my house. Some times i am out of town for work when these meetings happen so i cant get there. There are all sorts of reasons a person cant make it to a meeting every now and then. But every now and then is an exception not the rule for something that matters.

FYI, This was just one of the posts that Zef made. He also stated in another post that votes could be pm'd to him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok let's start nominating for this years board. I will not be run for re-election this year. Got to much on my plate and not fair t the club. But I had a great time and got to meet work with alote of very cool people with in the club.

I'll start the the nomination by nominate Chris(fishdoc) for President since he is one of the founding member of the club. I think he will be able to do a lot for the club.

VP Lindsey (pickupman) he did a great job with the swap.

Sec Travis (tkimmons85)

Treasurer Jay(SmyrnaReefer)

Anyone that's a member can vote and nominate anyone.
Also to be clear if you have a desire to help the club and you feel you can help with your experience and knowledge please put your name in and the position you want to run for.

Thanks Zef

I understand what you are saying Justin and I wasn't in no way knocking you.....I remember what you told me at the swap and you were right...."Grab members walking by that haven't worked the table; it's not fair only a few will do this job" I know things do happen and we can't always make all meetings I work every other weekend and can't make all meetings. I live in Pleasantville which is 76 miles away from the Critter even....so most EVERYBODY is at least an hour+ from me, but I live and love to travel.....that was my personal choice when I joined.
I guess what I am saying and I am speaking only for myself we need to promote participation in all our members....I am not singling any one person out. BUT when we have SO many members in vast locations etc etc it is hard to get everybody to participate when some may have just joined to get the reef club discount at LFS's. (When you pay 10-20/person that discount pays for itself in a couple months salt, and a purchase on a surgeon fish, LOL they may not ever count participation as a necessity because their membership met their needs)

I have no issue with the board that is in place bill. I also made nominations in that thread. I am talking about all the other items that were voted on at the meeting. But I am over it and have PM'ed you and stated my concern.

I also nominated the people I thought could help the club which included you Bill as president.

This my last so I don't look like i am trying cause problems.

The emphisys on how important actually coming to this meeting was made more than once. This was not a fish store meeting or a picnic meeting. This was a very important meeting to nominate BOD members and deciede the future of YOUR club. The members that made/took the initive to show up, also got the opportunity to actually see how the club could be run and how a normal club would function. They also got the opportunity to voice their right to vote. Online forums are not the place for voting, especially this one, as it is not moderated by anyone in MTRC.

Since there were not any other nominations for the BOD positions, and the club was asked at the meeeting if there were any new nominations for BOD positions, the BOD positions were filled with the nominated parties. President position was handed down to Bill from Zef at that time. There was a motion to "Vote on items at this meeting" and it voted 10-8 in favor of voting during this meeting. This is why there was voting taking place.

Being a founding member and former secretary of the PBMAS club in south florida that is currently 200+ members, I can say that all voting happens at the meetings and not online.

At the meeting, I also argued that all members should be able to vote. Rhett agreed and a few other people as well.

However, the ONLY thing I can ever remember coming up for vote in the past 5 years that I've participated in have been the elections. Having said that, I believe this BOD is giving more already by allowing at least who shows up the option to vote. In times past, the BOD (including myself when I served) have made decisions at Olive Garden (at least we did :) ) and through email. It worked fine. However, I believe this method met its limit the last 2 or 3 years when the club truly fell apart due to a lack of leadership (IE, someone who could deal with that and round up the club again) and the club has yet to rebound.

I love the thought of everyone being able to vote. Its the basis of our goverment, yada yada. However, you have to even show up on election day to vote. And those who care do. That said, after that we don't vote on every decision the government makes.

With further consideration past what we discussed at the meeting, I think it makes sense for small decisions to be made by the majority who SHOW UP. If you can't make it, that stinks. Its going to happen. To be honest, I think the only major vote that should be allowed for even mail-in ballots (and have been in the past, FWIW) is the BOD election. Everything else is small potatoes, anyway.

Just my (most recent) thoughts.

Having said all of THAT now, my apologies for giving the board such a hard time on Sunday. We won't be able to go anywhere if we have to collect votes on EVERYthing, but maybe just major decisions such as the (obvious) BOD meeting and maybe, for example, purchases over $1,000.

I agree with both Rick and Brandon. I

I think if there had at least been a thread stating hey this is the way things will be going forward that would have been enough for me. That's okay lesson learned won't happen again I wil be at the meetings I can and if I don't make it and there is something important that gets voted in then I guess that's tough for me.

Yeah... I'm still trying to figure out what the point of that was. ;)

Your right Brandon, everything will not be voted on by the majority, unless the BOD is split. Since we were split yesterday on our decision to vote at the meeting, the members were the tie breaker. The other votes were all unanimous.

Long story short I think everyone can see as the New BOD we want this to be everyone's club and not just the BOD doing stuff, like changing fees and otherthings without, First letting the majority of the club know what we are doing. Lets just say we will have Transparency with items we are deceiding on.

This was my point at the meeting, too, Justin, was that everyone should be let known first. (retracted because I missed some details) But its all good. Lets just move forward.

Thank you, sir. That was the point I had missed. It makes sense now. At one point, it had been suggested that we just vote to vote. That didn't make sense to me. I probably missed the split BOD part. :)

Again, this goes back to the "importance of the meeting" ;) If you were there you knew that voting was gong to take place :) The New BOD made the motion.

I think every one gets the basic changes that are going to take place and i think it will all be for the better in the long run. Online voting IMO promotes people staying home and not being part of the solution. I want everyone to have a say but you need to be part of the discussion to make an informed vote anyway, not by reading a post.
Thanks to all for working this out in a civil manner. Now lets all go to bed I'm Tired...
Bill

He had to put that Masters Degree to use somewhere  :reading:

Its really all of those papers I wrote more than the degree itself! :D

Overview... Things are looking good for the future of mtrc... Glad to see so many passionate about the club... The club is run by the members... For the members... We can't stress enough how important it is to participate in the meetings... It is important to discuss and resolve topics in each meeting... Being that we only meet once a month... We will post topics with as much advanced notice as possible... But certainly can't be held accountable for topics raised in the meeting it's self... Btw... The minutes are awesome!!! Great job!!!

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 26th

Ive been the club for 5 yrs but 1st 2yrs was just to get 10% off at our LFS. till i found RC and the club here. I Never was told about voteing on BOD till last elecation that i got voted in. so before this past meeting there was never any voting done At all. Im with rick I was michigans marine club for 10 years and we voted at meeting but the bod made most of the calls for the club.
I think the new bod is on the right track. and if cant make it to a meeting and cant vote. i wont be upset about it. i feel that the bod and its members that show to vote will do the right thing.

my 2 pennies
thanks zef
