MTRC Officer Elections

It's that time again :)

I've served 2 terms as President and wish to thank you all for the opportunity. It's been a good couple of years :) I will NOT be running for office this year. The end of January and the month of February is the time to nominate, lobby, drum up support, etc. There are 4 elected positions:

President
The President is generally responsible for making sure there are meetings and topics for the meetings. The President conducts club business at meetings (i.e., makes announcements, solicits input, etc.). The President is also responsible for making sure the Swap goes well. That said, the President can also delegate to other Board members. Whomever becomes the next President will inherit a club in pretty good shape. We had over 100 members at the end of 2008, and so far this year we have close to 50 members that have signed on or renewed. There is a decent bank account balance of around $7000 or so (Norman, the Treasurer has the exact figures). We have been reserving $5000 each year to make sure we can do things we would like for the Swap. So far expenses have not been anywhere near that, but you never know if an ice storm could pop up and cause a cancellation. Those $ also allow us to grow the swap and do more things each year. We have been pretty frugal with the $. The President will be a leader in setting the agenda for the coming year, and may elect to further grow the club enhance camaraderie and community by doing new and different things for meetings, or other events.

Vice President
The VP pretty much supports the President and takes on tasks that the President assigns. The VP also fills in for the Pres when the President is not available.

Treasurer
The Treasurer keeps the books and manages the Paypal account and the club bank account. The Treasurer also handles membership cards.

Secretary
The Secretary is someone who has generally helped out wherever needed and is a position that I was beginning to grow into the "meeting planner" -- but those duties are not set in stone.

So MTRC, this is your chance to step up and make the club even better. Try out new ideas, continue ones you think work well, and generally grow enthusiasm of the membership, and grow broader interest in responsible reefkeeping and aquarium husbandry.

It has been an honor to serve you all, and I look forward to the next set of leaders moving us forward.

So this is a thread to do 2 things:

1) post nominations for officers (feel free to nominate yourself if you would like :) ), and
2) post ideas about what you think the club should be like or do in the future.

We will have elections in March and the new officers will assume their club duties as soon as the election results are in :D

I also just wanted to post and let it be known that I will not be seeking election to any of the positions for this year. It seems that at this point, whether the rest of my education goes as planned or not, I am more than likely not going to be in Nashville for another full year. I would not want to leave a position mid-year.

I know I wasn't officially elected to the position as vice-president and instead was appointed to fill a position, but the time I served was fun and I'm really glad the swap was as successful as it was.

I'll be looking to hand off a "care package" for the next guy lucky enough for the honor of planning the swap. I hope that will prevent them from having to re-do a lot of the work that previous swap planners have already accomplished for them.

Not to take this off track but I just wanted to say that you two guys have done a wonderfull job with MTRC. It's really fun to watch it prosper like it is:D

Chris

man...with you two guys dropping out, who else do we have to run the show?!?!?! yikes!!!....you guys have done a FANTASTIC job!

hmmmm....so who do i nominate??? ....i would like to nominate that norman and brandon stays exactly where they are...unless of course, they would like to step up to Pres or VP

I also think we should have one more position that should be events Planer and that is the person who would be in charge of the swap planning and other special events. The main thing is the duties have to be spread out so they don't overburden any one person. I know there are a some people that have been in the club for a while and seam to get along with everyone. The key to this clubs success is participation from the majority not just a few people.

Also I would be glad to nominate Norman to stay as treasurer. I don't think I have to tell anyone that he is the most honest person that I know and I think he is a great asset to the club in the position that has to deal with the money.

I would like to nominate Brandon to move up to Vice President or Pres. if he would accept the extra responsibilities?

Jack & Brian will be hard to replace, (big shoes to fill). Thanks to both of you for your service to the club. I will be happy to remain as treasurer for another year, and Brandon could move up to Vice President if he would or remain where he is if that is what he desires. He has been a great service to the club, thanks Brandon.

I would like to nominated Wayne for president if he will accept. he has been with this club for years, and helped so many people with tanks, is always ready to assist other club members. He Served as Treasure for a while and would make a great president of the MTRC.

Thanks for the nomination, guys.

There are some HUGE shoes to fill for sure! Chris Stower's shoes come to mind as well. :)

Quite honestly, I'm going to have to think about VP. I will be (hopefully...) graduating next fall and I have a lot to do between now and then, not to mention already working full time and grad school full time at the moment (I know several of you can relate ;) ).

I'm thinking Norman for President would be good and what about John (gsusfreak) for secretary? :)

Brandon

i think wayne should be prez as well.... he could not be any friendlier/helpful...

john!!! john!!! john!!!...lol.... run for secretary bro..

If Wayne would accept the president nomination that is a no brainer! I do know he is a busy many though.. I support that..and also John would be great for secretary..Norman for VP or treasurer as well. I could actually be more involved myself during weekdays but I only make an average of 4-5 meetings a year because of my travel with work. We got some great guys here!

I think the nominations that have been mentioned are perfect. By the way, I do plan to renew my membership, should have it done before this month is over or might wait for the Feb. meeting.

Steve

Well after a lot of thought I have decided that I would accept the nomination for President as I can say that things with Amanda have slowed down a lot and it looks like school will not be very hard this year and we hope to sell the company that I am the chairman for so I should have the time to help keep the club moving in the direction that it is going.

Great nominations so far!

Some folks I think should consider running for an office:
Chuck (ocd_mariner) - I nominate for VP
Howard (HowardCath) - I nominate for Secretary, Treasurer or VP :)
Tim (luckyfish) - I nominate for President :)

That gives us:

So far I have these nominations:

President:
Brandon (NeveSSL)
Wayne (waynesworld)
Norman (fallinapart)
Tim (luckyfish)

VP:
Brandon (NeveSSL)
Norman (fallinapart)
Chuck (ocd_mariner)
Howard (HowardCath)

Treasurer:
Norman (fallinapart)
Howard (HowardCath)

Secretary:
John (gsusfreak)
Brandon (NeveSSL)
Howard (HowardCath)

"A Position":
James (? - we have more than one James in the club)

I would be happy if any of that list made it to the offices the one thing I would like to see though is that the people that are nominated accept it for the position that they would be interested in. I remember one year we had a little confusion on what position one member was running for.

On that note, I would like to only be listed in the "Treasurer" position, as I've just now learned how to do that job. :)

As far a suggestions that I have for the club there are a few that I think we should start talking about. The first is the club should start looking into becoming a nonprofit(legal) club. This would cost a little but will have some bennies to it. This would also help if we were able to get the tank in Vandy. Also if we wanted to make a bid for MACNA, which I think we should start looking into by setting up a committee to start that. If we wanted to we wold be looking at it for 3-4 years from now. I also think we should set up a field trip to SA I have talked with Mat and he said he would do it for our club. I also think that we could start looking into having some other special events like a BBQ/dive trip or something that we could all get together and have an activity like coral bingo or poker for corals or something like that. Sanjay also told me about a school program that they are part of that gets donated reef stuff and finds school teachers that want them in classes. Also for the more Internet group I would like to see us expand our club web presence to add photo galleries of our tanks and for those who have controllers maybe some data to show others the possibilities. That is just a few things I would like for us to start looking at, I know we will not be able to do it all but it is a start of something that we could do.
