Multicolor angel -or- Multibar angel

Will be in my 50g cube. Looking to upgrade rather soon but just wondering. Which would you prefer and why. Which is easier to care for? I think I like them both equally but for some reason, I always want the fish with the least success rate. Stupid. I know.

Thanks!

Tough choice, both are my favorites. But if I had choose between the two, I would go with the Multicolor Angel. I've had one for years. Very hardy. I plan on adding one to my group of pygmy's. I currently have a Golden and Multibar in my tank.

What size tank do you have? I currently have a coral beauty (1.5-2") in the tank so I'm assuming that I would need to get another angel bigger than he is to make it work in a smaller cube

I have a 240 gallon FOWLR tank. If your Coral Beauty is already established, I would get a slightly larger Multicolor. I did have mine in with a Coral Beauty and Flame Angel at the same time. The Multicolor ignored both. The Flame Angel always went after the Coral Beauty. I hardly ever see my Multibar Angel, I'm hoping he starts to come out more...will see.

The coral beauty has been in the tank for only 3 days. Hope to get the other angel this weekend if it all goes well. Trying to stick with another angel before the CB gets fully settled in.

The Multibar are much tougher to keep. My success with them has only come from having tons of natural things for them to eat. My Multibar has been with me for over 2 years and very seldom takes food I put in the tank. He is always picking in the caves. And he has taken out acans and clams.

I also have the multi-color, trio of goldens, pair of venustus, flame, pair of flamebacks, and a regal.

In a 50 cube you have a much better chance of success with the multicolor.

Mike,

The multicolors can change in an instant.

The last multicolor I had I bought as a tiny juvenile with bright colors. He went in my tank and his his was gone and he turned charcoal gray immediately. And he stayed that way.

A couple of big names in the hobby stopped by and saw the fish and thought for sure it might be a Debelius or hybrid of. But I knew it was just a dirty multicolor.

That multi was lost in our last crash - almost 3years ago. And I replaced it with another bright multi juvi. This one is 2+ years in our tank. it still looks like a multicolor - But in my aquaium the white body on the multi-colors always end up being darker.

Hey thank Mike and Dave for your input. I think I will go with the multicolor and wait until I upgrade to a larger system before attempting the bar and save myself and the fish the heart ache.

This is my baby multi bar. He loves frozen mysis and flakes and almost any food I put in.

My vote is for the multibar angel as well. Good luck and hopefully you're getting the fish for a deal.....a both are on the pricier side of the spectrum.

Personally, I love the pygmy angel. Hope that help.

I ended up picking up the MultiColor as well as a Blue Hawaiian Box Fish (male) off of Live Aquaria. Both fish ran me close to $300. Should be delivered by Saturday.

I plan to start off with a fresh water dip as Tony suggested to see if the angel has signs of flukes. Not sure if I can FW dip a box fish. Not sure I would want to since these guys are notorious for not wanting to eat and might not want to stress him out more than needed.

Fresh water dipping is really hard on the fish. In most cases you may end up killing the fish.

I'm sorry to be the Debbie downer here but why not just qt and treat the fish as needed? I see in another thread you are looking for ich cures. Maybe you can just have a qt protocol and take care of all these issues and concerns together.

I was fighting Ich some time ago. Let the tank run fallow for some time but then added a fish that wasn't QT'd. Luckily I haven't seen any Ich show up since that fish. I've been doing my best to purchase fish that have been in established, disease free tanks since then and also haven't ran into any issues. With this new batch of fish coming in, unfortunately I still have no QT setup since I never anticipated purchasing from other sources other than other reefers. Since I have fish due on Saturday, it's probably too late to set something up and have it stable by that time with bacteria and all. I defiantly need to consider some options to treat the angel so I won't have to treat the display in case he does have flukes

If you do ttm you don't need a cycle tank. Petco have their dollar a gallon sale right now I would purchase two 20 long for ttm and another 20 long to cycle while ttm is in process. By not quarantining you are just playing Russian roulette.

Completely forgot about TTM. The biggest problem is I have no room in the house for a QT. the gf will for sure kill me. Especially an additional x3 20g laying around. I might be able to get away with x2 10g and keep on the water changes in between the ttm to keep the ammonia levels down and treat with prazipro on the 2nd and 4th transfer periods. Unfortunately that's the best I can do with this one.

Do that ttm them better than not even quarantine. You don't get the observation periods since you have no cycle tank. Just ttm it 2 extra times should be golden.
