gigantea verrucae, califragelisticexpialidocious .. :)

Cool pic Gary.

Here's a tidbit, I heard once that S. gigantea was so named because at the time it was first discovered, there weren't that many anemone species described and it was the largest the biologists had seen at that time. Of course we now know that S. haddoni and S. mertensii are much larger, but they hadn't been "discovered" and well .. the name has stuck. :)

Don't know if it's true or not, but, makes for an amusing anecdote nonetheless (urban legend or otherwise). ;)

Oh no! Your anemone has purple spot disease.

Your in luck. I happen to be the only one able to cure this disease. Let me know when would be a good time to stop by take the anemone back to my lab.:)

Kidding aside, excellent specimen.

Have you tried feeding clams gary? My gigantea seems to love them, also watchman gobies, but thats a different story lol.

what kind of clams? I've never fed clams to any of my anemones.
I feed frozen mysids, cyclops, fresh uncooked shrimp/prawns, krill, silversides and small pieces of other types of fresh fish from the market. I've tried squid- but all my anemones rejected it.

They are called clams on the half shell. They are uncooked baby clams and they are put out by h2o life out of san diego. The shell is about the size of a quarter and the anemones i have love it. They also enrich the clams with phytoplankton, i dont know if that does anything but it says it does lol.
Just a fyi, all of my anemones love it.

I feed my anemones scallops on a regular basis, but I can't recall ever trying clams. I did feed some snow crab to my Haddon's, once... but only once! :D

Most host anemones will take any meaty seafood but I've seen a few exceptions every now and then. Thanks for the tip :)
