mushroom flatworms

so I purchased a couple of powerheads from someone I met online. While I was there he gave me a small frag of a mushroom for free, I was very pleased, my first mushroom I asked if I needed to quaretine the frag, he said he hadn`t noticed anything that he could warn me about and seemed kind of offended that I asked. Well when I got home I noticed Red Planaria flatworms. Not wanting to add to my quarantine tank eithier, I added it to a 1 gallon fishbowl with an airstone and I change about 1/2 gallon per day, each time trying to eliminate and remove any flatworms that I could see. So my question is after two weeks of doing so and not seeing any more flatworms can I now add to my tank or is there possiable eggs left behind not visable without microscope. thanks bigfish

I would dip the rock the shroom is attached for at least 3-4 minute do no submerge the shroom though bring the water level right up to the foot of the shroom and hold it or rig it some way and then. I'd place it into you QT tank.
Don't worry about the shroom drying out it will be fine.
If you can completely remove the rock it's attached to and place only the shroom into the QTY tank RFW don't care to much for shrooms but will hide out int he rock.

Don't ever worry about hurting someones feelings I always ask if they have somthing even if I've bought from them before or even know them personally. If they are a real reef keeper they will tell you anything they can to help you.

Good luck

hey jonathan thanks for responce, it`s actually attached to a frag plug. Also did you mean dip in rodi water. How would I go about removing mushroom from plug any tips. thanks bigfish

hey Don, so your saying I should dip plug and coral completely. Also as I stated above if I don`t see any flatworms SB ok to add to display. more questions how long is it ok to dip coral.thanks bigfish

You can dip shrooms in low salt water but you should never dip them in pure unsalted water at it destroys there membranes it would be like us getting second degree burns and letting heal without treatment. They will live but anything could kill it or damage it.
If the shroom is on a frag plug and inspection shows no signs of flatworms. then for safety reasons I would place it into your QT tank. rushing it into your DT even with one egg will prove fatal in the end.

Also I meant dip it in tank water pull a cup from your DT and add your chemical of choice and dip the plug.

depending on the concentration of the chemical used the dip can last anywhere from 2minutes to 10-15 minutes. Always read your directions first and if your going to experiment try it out on an "extra" coral before dipping one you want to live.
It's to the point now I don't even measure I can eyeball it almost perfectly.

Where do you live ?

welcome back jonathon thanks for reply.I have lugol`s iodine will this have any affect on FWs. also I`m in riverside, california

I have dipped large colonys of shrooms in just tap water for a couple minutes. Flatworms die fast in any kind of fresh water. My shrooms were fine.

They will live but will not live happy and your lucky they not waste away on you.

Never use tap water it's just not good for anything tank wise. But until you learn for yourself I speak empty words. I to used tap water for the first 2 year of my first reef until the rocks stopped holden the toxins and it crashed my tank.
