Mushroom growth rates

How fast do shrooms typically grow and how often do they divide/multiply? I've read they overgrow some tanks and others can't seem to get them to survive. I have about 8 discosomas for a couple weeks now. They are doing well as far as I can tell. Good expansion and all. Just wondering what to expect.

depends. some people have great luck and end up cutting them back, like pests. others like me have like 5 variatons with no growth in any.... but i have actually seen a number split into 2.

my shrooms grow like weeds. When I frag them if I leave ANY piece of one it grows into another shroom.

How often can I expect them to reproduce? They seem happy and I'm hoping they do. My wife's even becoming interested now that I've started adding corals to my tank.

depends on how clean the tank is (how much they can get to eat) now im not saying the dirtier the better im saying alittle bit of gunk in there is good. also remember if they dont end up spliting in about a month then you can cut them up and the peaces you cut will grow into shrooms

The more interesting color variations seem to be more of a challenge, bbwilson. A horizontal cut that leaves you with a base and a top is pretty safe with all the shrooms I have tried to multiply. Make more htan you wnat, and then experiment. Cutting up like a pizza- I tend to lose the pieces to current flow, or slime out, and larger pieces form larger corals faster. Best of luck to ya

If you want to speed up division and they are already in the display tank, just take a razor right down the middle of a healthy mushroom and leave it where it's at. In a couple of weeks you will have two. You don't have to worry about cutting all the way through the base. This will work with rics also.

I tried this exact thing but the mushrooms just grew back together into a single. I even make sure I split right down the mouth. One was a red Carribean and the other was a blue spotted teal. I have had luck though with cutting the whole cap off and leaving a base.

That's odd. I have done this hundreds of times with many types of shrooms and have never seen them grow back together. I'm not saying it can't or don't happen though. Did you cut all the way down through the base?

You could also make two cuts perpendicur to each other (+) and get four, but IME it takes longer for them to recover.

After thinking about your statement about them growing back together. Do you mean a common base with two mouths or back to a single polyp? I ask because I have had them not separate for a while but there will be two mouths. Eventually they do split though. There may have been times where I just didn't notice either. They seem to separate faster if you cut all the way through the base as much a razor will reach on the rock.

Wow! I didn't know you could just cut'em up like that! I think I'll give it a try. The one I want came as a hitchiker on a LR and I only have the one. (I have another variety, different color, but I have plenty of those for now.)

Depends on the shroom and conditions wheather or not they will grow back together agian. I have fraged more shrooms then i care to remember and have had maybe 50-60 of them wield back together Now i simply cut through then use my 1inch chisel and with one sturdy tap pop the rock right in half.

If you wish to properly reproduce them (natural) place asmall rock next to them when they grab ahold of it slowly move the rock in a diffrent direction over 3-4 days the shroom should be oval shaped if not split.

Or if you want to split them by force put the peice or rock or frag disc there wait for it to climb on it half and half then simply cut right down the middle. Be sure to get a 50/50 on the moulth if no moulth it will grow back very very slowly if your conditions are correct and you do it right you will have a fully healed and happy shroom with 6 day fo the forced split.

Here is a pic of my shrooms. They started as one and have turned into this. The original shroom that started this moved to another rock. It is shown in the 2nd pic and is reproducing again.
