I love my shrooms but they are taking over my 55g reef! My tank has been up for almost 8 yrs now. I stopped adding corals about 5 yrs ago and everything has flourished, but for the last year my Mushrooms have started killing and injuring my other corals. They have killed several candy corals and are overtaking some zoes and a plate coral. I have tried removing some shrooms manually when i do water changes, but I think this may be making the problem worse. Any ideas on how to cull my mushroom crop? I love them but I can't have them ruining everything else. Like I said it is only a 55g , please help!!!

Similar thing was going on in my tank then I started vodka dosing, very low dose, and the mushrooms don't seem to like it. They are still opening and healthy but not so robust and the spread has slowed to a dull roar.

You can use kalk paste. Just use enough to kill the mushroom. I'd probably kill a few at a time. To much kalk will raise your Ph quickly. Trying to remove them by cutting them will only cause them to reproduce.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies! I like the idea of the aiptasia killer, i think it's called Joe's Juice, does anyone know if that works or it's effects on my water chemistry? If that doesn't work, what is the procedure using the kalk paste?

Thanks Again!

Joe's Juice will have the same effect as the kalk. Kalk is cheaper though (Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime). Just mix up a paste of kalk and water, load it in a turkey baster, and put it on the mouth of the mushroom. It will die. Once again, I recommend that you only do a couple mushrooms at a time since the kalk will raise your Ph. Do not exceed a 1/4 tsp. per 50 gallons. Wait at least an hour between attempts at killing the mushrooms.

Dude frag them off the rock with a scalpel and glue them to plugs and sell them or give them away to friends or people like me who are beginning a new tank and want to start with something hardy! How about it!

I agree with the fragging, put some reef rubble in a container cut the shrooms from the live rock as close as you can with a scalpel and drop in into the container. put some nylon mesh over the container and leave it in your tank for a few weeks. Once they adhere to the rocks on their own you can try to sell them off or barter with your LFS for credit or something. There are youtube video on fragging mushroom coral, if you have as much as you say I would take the entire mushroom rather then cutting them in half or quarters or anything. Good luck

ill pay for them. and also joes juice would work on shrooms. is you truely want them goon kalk past is the way to go. but sell them to ur LFS or MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

i'm in the same boat and have a mushroom infestation. i tried injecting aiptaisa x but could only a one or two of the four or five that i inject actually die. my shrooms are sprouting much faster than i can kill them. I have noticed that pointing a powerhead at them will make them move away a little.

I am with the rest of the recent posts. Frag them out and sell them. There are quite a few of us in the Southeast that regular USPS priority shipping would get it here pretty quick and we would pay for the shipping plus some extra for the rock and supplies.

Errr, no one's stating the obvious? The shrooms are a pain in the A$$... I actually like them. Take the 1 or 2 corals on the rock you like, cut THEM off, take the rock FULL of shrooms to the fish store, and trade for a new piece of rock. If there's lots of shrooms, you could probably talk the store into giving you a small coral as a bonus.

what sucks is that some stores wont take shrooms anymore. I tried all the stores around me once and the best deal I got was a $15 credit. When most stores charge $5/pound for rock, my 5 pound rock covered in shrooms would become a $10 loss.

I just sell them to local reefers for a few bucks per handful of shrooms.
once I figure out how to ship, I'll open the offer up to you guys.

Some shops will give you a rock in trade as well as the credit if you ask. I think they would understand. Otherwise, break up the rock and sell the smaller chucks. Just take a few in at a time and I bet you will get more $$ that way...anyway just some ideas..good luck

Is anyone who was interested in these mushrooms still interested? I have a couple hundred red mushrooms. At this point I have several large rocks with 30+ on each that I'm willing to sell or trade. Someone close would be nice, though I'm willing to ship. Send me a message if interested.

Kara - what colors do you have? I'm over the hill in Los Gatos and might be interested depending on color. I have reds, pinks, and reds w/ blue spots already.
