Must have inverts!

I have a CBS with two peppermint and a cleaner and have had no problems. Just keep it well fed and you should be fine. Also had a Harlequin until I lost him in a tragic pump accident.

Nice thanks guys, I think I'll give a CBS and a fire shrimp a shot. Sounds like ill need need to feed with a whole cube of food instead of a half from now on.

Just a quick warning; I had to get rid of my cleaner and fire shrimp because they were such persistent little thiefs. It got so bad my anemone would not open up any longer.

I've seen CBS munching on smaller peppermint before.

Hey i just picked up some electric blue hermit crabs last week from aquarius.
They're pretty cool looking. Waiting for them to get some halloween hermits.
+1 for the CBS eating a peppermint shrimp like candy!

My old CBS female was huge and her appetite was just as large! Everytime I'd try a new peppermint shrimp, she'd catch and devour it within minutes!! BUT, she never once touched my cleaner shrimp.

Thanks rippinfrags,

I had forgotten that a peppermint once started picking at my RBTA. I got rid of him, a while later my clowns finally took to the anemone. Since then I've had a couple peppermints and haven't had any problems since. Do you think the clowns wil defend the anemone if the shrimp start picking at it again?

I'd like to try all 4 shrimp, but it may also be pretty crowded in my 60 gal 48" wide tank. Is that too much? Right now the peppermint and the tiger shrimp are on the left side. I figured if I got a big fire shrimp he should be ok with a CBS on the right

Yes and no, my clownfish would keep the shrimp away until feeding time. The clowns would leave the anemone to eat and the shrimps would sneak over and literally sit on top of my anemone waiting for food.

You could get away with all four, but the CBS worries me.

Thanks again Rippinfrags, I'm in no hurry. I think I'll add a fire shrimp first then hope that the CBS will be smaller in size and not bother the others. I know its a gamble now, but I will give it a go in the near future. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

Meanwhile, I hardly ever see the tiger shrimp and watchman goby. but every morning I wake up there is a ton of sand that got moved or a new hole. lol luckily the water looks pretty clear during the day most of the time and hasn't bothered me. I'm still hoping that they will make more appereances in the future.

Another thought, I still really want to try another anemone crab. But I am worried about the crab and clowns not getting along. The clowns continue to lay eggs, and I have a feeling they are more defensive and probably wouldn't allow the crab to get to close. So I wonder if anyone might recommend another vibrant colored anemone that from their experience doesn't move around the tank much or at all? Currently I have a RBTA. I would want the new anemone to stay smaller in size if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I have really taken a liking to h. Malu anemones, however you will need a sand bed of at least 3 to 4 in. in order to keep one. H. Malu's come in many different colors and only get to be about 6 to 8 in. when full grown. The hardest part about h. Malu anemones is being able to properly ID one. Most lfs call them sebae anemones, which is a general term that describes two very different anemones. One being an h. Malu and the other is an h. Crispa. H. Crispas get to be 2 ft. In diameter, like I said two different anemones, both referred to as sebaes. Anyways here is a picture of mine hosting my snowflake clownfish.

Rippin,

That does look nice. I especially like the idea of it staying in the sand. I'll have to keep my eye out. Thanks for the info about differentiating the different species.

Just out of curiosity, I have a nice spot in mind for one. Unfortunately there are several mushrooms in the area. Which is tougher and would prevail? The maul anemone or the bunch of anemones?

2nd on Sea Cucumbers. I have a pink and green one and it's mesmerizing to watch. I'm also partial to urchins if you're not worried about your coralline algae. I have a broadspine, but I've seen some gorgeous tuxedo urchins especially in orange and red.

Can't find any info on cucumbers in low nutrient systems... Any info?

I know that there are 2 kinds of sea cucumbers, detritus feeders and filter feeders. Filter feeders will typically climb the rocks/glass and have fans that they catch marine snow on for food. I'm not sure how to determine if my system is high or low nutrient, but I don't feed mine at all and he doesn't seem to have any problem eating and growing.

Love my yellow watchman/pistol pair. The pistol does make a mess of the sand-but it's fun to watch the two of them in and out of their tunnels.
