Must-haves for EASY DIY controller?

I can't seem to find this by searching - for the original Hydra board, is there a diagram that shows what each of the headers are for? (there is some silk-screening on the board, but it is small and some is covered up by components)

Has anyone tried those 19,95$ Chinese probes from ebay ("NEW Replacement Probe pH Sensor Resolution 0.01 PH") ?

USB BUB question - I plugged in my Hydra with a modern device usb bub board plugged into the FTDI Main header. I can measure 5v at the 5v pin on the header. I don't ever get Windows 7 to show a new com port when I plug the bub into my usb hub for my laptop (I can plug a flash drive into that slot on the hub and windows recognizes the flash drive, so the hub isn't bad - but maybe the bub board doesn't like being on a hub?)

I also tried unplugging the bub from Hydra, and connecting it up to the laptop, still does not recognize the bub.

On my windows 7 machine in the Arduino software I can see ports com1 and com3 - com17 - these don't change when I plug in or unplug the bub. Shouldn't I see a com port added?

I also tried another machine with Windows XP. It doesn't recognize the bub either. I don't see any 'Other' devices in the Device manager on either the win7 or xp machine.

Any ideas?
 
I can't seem to find the article again, but I seem to remember that on windows 7 you will need the FTDI drivers. I know on windows XP and vista it happens automatically.

I didn't see a driver install executable in the arduino drivers folder. The documentation for the Arduino software, and on the FTDI website, said that Windows 7 will install it once you plug the usb cable in, or in XP you can manually install the driver for the 'Other' device in the control panel Device Manager (I didn't get either of those).

Is there a way to just install the drivers with a setup executable? (I didn't see one)

Since I don't see it happening automatically on XP or Win7, I am wondering if I got a bad bub board.
 
Does the bub appear in the hardware profiles when you plug it in? If it appears you can manually point it to the driver. Not real familiar with 7 so can't really give you a play by play on the process.

It doesn't appear in Windows7 device manager, or in Windows XP device manager.

In the Arduino software under serial ports, in win7 it shows com1 and com3 through com17 (tried them all, none work), and in winxp it shows only com1.
 
I have BLINK!!! (I guess I am easily amused). I found a setup exe on the FTDI site, and it installed the drivers. No clue why both of my machines wouldn't auto-install like the Arduino directions say.

Great work getting to this point. I've been following along off and on in the background. I think it's time to contribute to the build. If anyone has a few Hydra boards they would be willing to part with, send me a PM.

I'm interested in building a prototype and giving feedback.
