Sun corals are very pretty. They are not photosynthetic though. They require live feedings several times a week and are considered by most to be a HIGH maintenance coral. It may be that the person you bought it from on ebay found that out, and was trying to get rid of it. They don't like light very much hence they often live in caves.
When the lights are on, they will curl up into themselves (quite ugly actually) only showing their polyps when being fed or at night.
In my opinion, i don't thing I would waste valuable tank space on such a picky and seldom seen coral. There are many other species that are easier to keep, and more visible during daylight.
(Though they are beautiful when 'out and about')
The method "mahalamata" suggested works really well if the colony is small enough. Especially if there are other fish around.
You could always try it out, and trade it if you feel it's too much hassle. Maybe a nice Tridacnid clam.
