My 120 Tech sps build

The tank is a 120 Gallon Oceanic Tech Series. The plan from the beginning has been sps and a high bio load. I have 2 young children (2 and 3 yr) and a wife that want to see stuff swim… I’m more of a techy and like to see all the high end equipment and keep stuff that requires a challenge. I started this journey back in July of 07. I had 3 long months of research and equipment gathering to make sure I knew what I was getting into. Then I had a month setback when my fridges waterline broke and had to replace 400 sq ft of kitchen/laundry room/bathroom flooring… The underlayment and up had to be replaced; only the subfloor was able to stay.

A recap of the last 5 months… Early July I was plotting on graph paper to see if everything was going to fix.

I wanted as much water under the tank as I could fit to help with the params and to keep a fuge. I decided on the Vortech power heads fairly early on, as I liked the idea of having 2 rock islands and having a vortech behind each island.
Once I figured out I was running MH, vortech’s in the back and a large sump… I started on my stand. The footprint of the stand is 48.5x29x36” (WxDxH)… I added 4.5” o the Depth to give the vortech’s room in the back so I could have a hidden panel to hide them in the stand. I also made 2 hidden doors on the side of the stand to allow me to get out the 45x12x22” acrylic sump. The sump was broken into 2 sections. The fuge was 29x12x19 and the return was 14x12x19, 3” at the top for if the pump is off. Started construction on the stand in August and finished early December.

I ordered my rocks from MarcoRocks.com, I got 100 lbs of Fiji and 25 lbs of tonga. Next up was getting a skimmer; I first decided to go with an H&S A200 from finsreef.com. They were great, but due to shipping issues the first one got lost and the 2nd one was cracked. They felt so bad they found me a AP 851 from Atlantis Aquariums and worked with me to get that one. Atlantis is a great store and Marvin has a great place there in Richmond.
Mid Oct I setup a 40 breeder with the 2 vortech’s and a HOB power filter. Then added the 120# of rocks and filled it up with salt water. I then added 2 pieces of really nice coralline algae rocks from another reefers tank and 2 cups of ls to seed the dead rocks. They sat in there until 1/15/08, that’s when they were added to the 120.

I used 2x4 and a 2x10 in the rear to add some extra support since there was no cross beam for the back of the tank.

After I added the rocks I tested the water 2 hours later, ammonia tested at 0, nitrites were at 0, and nitrates were at 10. Ammonia and trites never went up, and the nitrates ended up going down to 0 within 2 weeks after adding 100 lbs of ls to the fuge.
I just hooked up the skimmer a week and ½ ago because I was missing my inlet union, still waiting on it from deltec. I ended up fabricating my own out of a compression fitting screw piece and a thin wall ¾” union from Fergusons.

Even with no livestock in the tank, the skimmer has still been producing a ltr + of darker than tea skimmate a day… The algae was able to take off during the week between turning on the lights and getting the skimmer running but it has already started dieing off once the skimmer went online.
Diatom bloom lasted for about 2 days then the green algaes started taking over. I have several little patches of hair algae but they are already turning clear, I’m assuming that means they are dieing form a lack of nutrients. (nitrates and phosphates are at 0 salifert test kits).

I just bought a 120 tech.I have not started working on setting it up. It will replace my 90 gal tank and I am very excited about it.I am hoping to have all the bells and whistles. I know I am going to run a uv steralizer,I deciding now if I am going to use the tunze ( as of right now I am pretty sure I will).I am looking at your pics right ow thanks for sharing.....

Livestock... Lets first start with my semi-completed list... (in no particular order)

Regal Angel
Purple Tang
Copperband Butterfly
Flame angel
Masuda Hog
Lawnmower Blenny
2 false perc
Chromis (4+)
Mandarin

top 1/2 of the tank all acro's and bottom 1/2 monti and few other sps sprinkled in.

I have 2 false perc's in my qt currently, they have been sitting in there for the last 3 weeks. I plan on keeping them in there for a full 6 weeks then letting them go into the DT. They are doing really well and eating very well... no signs of anything bad so far.

I'm 95% certain my next fish will be the regal, its just a matter of when I'm going to add it... I'm determined to have one and have read countless threads about them... I know what I'm getting into and nature of the fish... Also know they will do much better with the tank to them self with a piggy fish showing them how to eat, thats where the clowns come in... so with nothing forcing them to hide and someone to show them how to eat... and water quality not being an issue with the skimmer... the only other thing is enough establishment on the rocks for him to eat until he learns to eat from the water.

Since the rocks were dead, and there is no carryover life, that could take a while... I like the idea of buying some sponges and zoa's to put in the tank so he has something to eat at first but dont think they would make it with the nutrient free tank environment that the skimmer provides...

What do you all think? And what do you think about the stocking list?

The only issue i'm having with the tank currently is my stupid return pump plumbing... I had it set up for about a week and half and then had a leak right at the pvc joint by the input to the ball union on the return pump... So I drained the return section, got a new bh and replaced the leaking section... then the ball valve started leaking, right were the o ring for the pressure side of the input is.... it stops leaking once the water gets down to 8" or so in the return part of the sump, but then micro bubles are getting into the dt... at this point i'm getting ready to sell the T4 and just get 1 or 2 ehiem's... the other thing is the plumbing and pump is taking up a ton of stand room...

At first I wanted everything external to help with heat but I've broken down and decided to get a Ocean Geotronic's Ocean 600 chiller... Its not to heavy so I plan of keeping it on top of the canopy. The top of the canopy is almost 7' tall so it should be hidden up there.

Other things still to do... finish the trim on the stand. Still need the hand rail done, chair molding around the bottom of the canopy and crown molding on top of the canopy. Then I have to do the panels to cover up the vortechs... and add sand...

although I may just tell the wife I 'forgot' the sand and keep it bb, then I can add 2 more vortech's in the back (2 on the bottom 1/3 of the tank by the overflow and 2 in the top 1/3 of the tank by the outside edges... that way I can get the controller and play with a lot of different flow combinations while everything remains hidden.

Very nice! Did you go with Marco rocks, or ecorox, or something similar? If so how much did you put in there?

Very nicely scaped, I love the look! If going bb, make sure and have lots of flow.... You haven't skimped, and that is a wise choice as you plan on sps. Sounds like you have a great plan, I cannot wait to see the results.....Good Luck!

there are 2 vortech's in their on full blast so thats 6k of flow and getting about 1k out of the T4... Since the power heads are behind the rocks, there is flow on the front of the islands but not nearly as much as the top and back... to fix this (if there is an issue, its not a dead spot, its just not flowing swift) I was either going to add 2 tunzie's to the front corners pointing towards each other to hit all of that area or go with the stagard 4 vortech's so they would hit enough of the edges of the islands to have the water hit the front and come back... with the 4 vortech's that would be 1200 max flow :eek1:... could do lots of random flow with that... I really like the clean look of no equipment so was trying to maximize that.

more aquascape shots... Since these pictures (2 days ago) I used one box of the Deltec AquaScape puddy to secure the rocks in place and move them away from the glass a few inches. That stuff was great and had to use very little to get good results.

So how far along do you all think the tank is?? nitrogen cycle is done, trates are down to 0... so algae is next... i've heard that can take months.... my big algae spike is gone and a good portion of the algae thats there (not much) is already turning clear, i can go a week+ without having to clean my glass now... i'm sure once I add fish and feed it will grow faster... so is that my answer? add the fish in 3 weeks and see how it responds??

I agree, the vortech's should do the trick. If you keep the bottom glass somewhat clean, you can observe from underneath the tank to ensure there are no collection spots on the underside of the reef. I did this with my previous bb sps tank, luckily, I had no issues whatsoever, and my colors were outrageous. Your tank has tons of potential..... Again, nicely done!

I have seen several threads of recent rock people have received from Marco and I thought the good days were gone. Your pictures paint a different picture. The rock you got looks nicer than what I did last summer!

Thanks... This is my first time at all this stuff so I've been trying to go slow and do it right... but not knowing whats 'right' its nice to hear complements from my peirs... especially something like aquascaping that you only have one shot at, once you start placing sps it becomes pretty permenant!

I received these sept 2nd, 2007. I was very happy with my order...and shipping was only $5 a box! so $15 total for 125 lbs of rock to my door (3 day ups).
