My 125G build

Somehow this guy jumped in my truck when I was at Elliot's. Then somehow he jumped in my tank when I got home.

Amazing lil fish.

Nice find. Judging from the tail pattern looks like H. melanurus.

Well this just sucks. Woke up this morning to find my wrasse dead on the sand bed:( No idea what happen, I just checked my water parameters on Wend and everything looked great. He seemed perfectly fine yest, ate like a pig and when the lights shut off dove in the sand like normal. The only thing I did last night was put a new filter sock on, new as in brand new. It made my skimmer go crazy when I first put it in on, could something have been in the filter material that killed it? All of my corals seemed fine this morning.

Dang this sucks.

OT, did anyone feel that earthquake this morning? Crazy!

Sorry Josh. The filter sock might have been the culprit, but if your corals look fine I would say it was probably something else. A lot of wrasses have intestinal parasites.

What are the signs of that? To my inexperienced eyes the fish looked great. Very active and would eat till his belly wanted to burst, physically he looked fine as well.

That sucks Josh. I had the same experience late last night. The sixline I just bought from the same place just croaked out of no where. Fed the tank as usual, fish all ate and all seem normal. A few hours down the road I see hermits all over a dead sixline. I believe my fish came from the same order as your fish too. Guess there was something going around? Super weak sauce :(

Signs of intestinal parasites are white stringy poop, and usually, eventual loss of appetite. The cause of death could have been any number of things really but I doubt it was something in the water since corals are more sensitive to that kind of thing than fish are.

Warning... soapbox tangent coming...
I'm not bashing anyone but this is the reason I don't buy any fish locally. I have tried once or twice and always ends in the same result for me. I don't blame the fish stores, but in our area there isn't exactly a wholesaler getting top quality fish to them. IMO it's a simple matter of buying power, you save the best stuff for your best customers. Some stores go further to condition the fish, but none around here are known to do that (at least I haven't heard of it), I can think of a couple in the Bay Area.

My experience with Live Aquaria has been so much more positive, and I'm talking about since I have been in the hobby. The prices are usually inline with most LFS but the quality is better than the LFS. I have had very few fish from Live Aquaria die on me in QT and the ones I have lost after QT have been due to my own fault resulting in a loss of multiple fish (i.e.tank crash). The L.A. Diver's Den is even higher quality and of course at a higher cost. Blue Zoo and Reef Hot Spot are also better than average for quality IMO.

Recently I went with a few friends on a round trip to a bunch of Sacramento LFS. What I notice is some had a nicer selection of "interesting" fish but the prices were similar to what I would see at Live Aquaria, so there's no way I'm going to buy it locally when I can probably get a higher quality fish at the same or similar price AND a 14 day stay-alive guarantee. Even if the fish at the LFS is 50% of the cost vs. the fish online I probably won't pull the trigger because if that fish is lost I'm out the $$ and if I buy another one I've now invested the same amount of money and probably still have a higher probability for loss.

When people talk about "I had this fish, or that fish but it died because of X", in my head I almost always either immediately blame them or immediately blame the source :) Fish shouldn't just die after a while, many of them can live 10 or more years. The way I decide who to blame works like this: If the fish dies in QT (or within a few weeks of purchase)... usually the source. If the fish makes it through QT and dies within a year, usually the owner. There is really no blaming the fish.

/ end soapbox... oi don't get me started about fish :D

It saddens me that I must come onto a message board to defend my fish practices and procedures, but here goes.
1. ALL of my fish come from MAC certified wholesalers. http://www.aquariumcouncil.org Sea Dwelling Creatures and on occasion Quality Marine.
2. I NEVER sell a fish that is not eating, or is sick looking in any way.
3. My fish get fed the best food I can get my hands on. I have been making it personally for the last 3 years.
4. I always tell people how long I have had the fish. And I will warn them of the higher risk factor of taking them after only a short time in the system.
5. Compatibility. I never put a fish in a tank where it will be harassed or killed. I always place them in the most stress free spot available.
6. Most fish I will not carry on hand. For example, any fish that will not survive well or even at all in an aquarium, you will never see in my shop. If someone asks me to special order a fish like that for them, then I take into consideration their experience and aquarium setup and make a judgment from there. There are certain circumstances though where someone will "ditch" a fish on me, or even leave it on my doorstep so I have this wonderful gift when I arrive at the store. Those times are pretty unavoidable.

"....in our area there isn't exactly a wholesaler getting top quality fish to them."
Find me a better wholesaler and I will switch.

"Some stores go further to condition the fish, but none around here are known to do that" If what I do isn't considered going "further", then what exactly do I need to do to make it onto your list? Quarantine for intestinal parasites?

Also, I hate selling fish, a lot of u know that. I only carry them to keep my customers happy and returning. IMO I go to great lengths to get healthy stock and to sell healthy stock. I am always open to advice and constructive criticism that will create healthier specimens for my customers.

Elliott

PS: Sorry your thread got derailed Josh :worried2:

No updates on the tank really, just letting things grow out. I did pick up a couple fish last week, had to quickly set up my qt tank. Fish are eating great so far, look very healthy. Going to treat with prazipro and throw them in my main tank!

Nice PBT Josh. I'd suggest you get him nice and fat before you treat with Prazi. It will supress his appetite and he may not eat for a week or more after the Prazi. Some fish do still eat, some eat less, you never know until you run the meds what they'll do.
