Hello all,
New to the forum here and the saltwater hobby. Just got my 180 gallon tank in this weekend and figured I would do a journal as I get it setup. Let me know what yall think!

What size sump are u going to use

I just ordered one of the Emerald Trigger Systems 39 and should be here later this week. I just got three t5 fixtures in last night and I have 110 pounds of Walt Smith's reef rock 2.1 curing in the basement. Also ordered a Vertec M1 pump and Reef Octopus Classic 202-S 8" internal protein skimmer which I hope gets here this week too so I can start working on all the plumbing this weekend. I'm getting soooo excited!

Oh and I got my saltwater mixing station up and running about two weeks ago and have my QT tank ready go as well.

I'm going to start off with some mp40s on the sides and probably add some mp10s on the back later down the road.

Got the t5 lights install and looking good if I say so my self. There are three fixtures installed but you can only see two of them. Couple of the bulbs got broken during shipping and waiting to see if they will get replaced.

Got the sump and a few other goodies come in tomorrow. Should make for a good weekend!

What do you want to keep in your new tank?

Still working on that but for sure you got to have some clownfish and blue tang. There are a few tangs that I really have my eye on but got to make sure they can go together of course. Would love a powder blue or achilles. The wife really wants a foxface. Cardinalfish, goby, firefish. As for corals, I really have no idea. I need to do a lot more research on those.

Glad to hear you're doing your research!

As for fish, the order of introduction is very important. Make a fish wish list, then research them, and then narrow down the list. Introduce them to your tank smallest, most timid first, biggest boldest last. There are some tricky exceptions. For example, I plan to add cherub angelfish, which only grow to about two inches, but because of their aggression/territoriality, they will be introduced last. Clownfish also are very territorial, so add them later.

Since you are new to the hobby, you may want to start with some macro algae, to help with nutrient buildup. Then start with some of the easier corals. Good luck!

Thank you for the tips Michael. I see that it says you are located in Boulder... Do you have any LFS recommendations?

You're welcome!

I know Aqua Imports and Exotic Aquatics, here in Boulder. Both are good shops. I'm sure Denver has good shops too, but I don't know any of them. For me it's either here or the internet stores.

Maybe someone else in the area can chime in here.

Already loving this. I really wanted that same tank (but maybe different overflow) but just couldn't make the space for it. Settled for the 4x2x2 120G instead.
This build will be fun to watch!

Thanks Don! I almost went with a 150 gallon but the wife said "Why don't you see how much the next size up costs." That was all I needed lol.
