My 220 Gallon SPS Dominate Build Thread

Very nice!
I like your little frag trees.
How do you like the gyres?
I'd LOVE to try a couple on my tank..
They look very interesting and low profile..

The GYRE cleans up the look inside the tank and the frag trees "¦"¦. it's a SPS Christmas everyday.

Where'd you get the gyre, I thought they didn't come out till next month?

You are right. Gyres are available in October. This a pre-production model sent to me by Maxspect Canada for my enjoyment. (oops I mean feedback) :D

How do you like the flow and controllability of the gyres?
How's the quality of the product?
Bill, you know you can't just post a video of your tank and try to slip in a product like that without giving a little review!! :)
Come on! Let's hear about them..
I want a few for my tank so whaddya got for us?!

LOL can't get anything past the sharp eyes of a SPS enthusiast.

The flow is superb. Whats not to like about 5000 gph spread out nice and wide across and over my reef? What is even better is the fact you can independently adjust each side of the GYRE to direct flow upward or downward or upward on one side and downward on the other. Or even turn the entire Gyre and change the angle if you need to. The prototype doesn't have all the cosmetic details that I am sure the final product will have but the quality of build is excellent, as expected, and service will be backed by one of the best in the industry so I am not worried there either.

Controllability is what you expect. Adjustments can be made in the following modes Constant Flow, Pulse/Wave and there is a Feed Mode. Final details will follow next month.

With Gyre's offering of adjustably, controllability and power I am sure this will be a reef keepers must have product.

Question on lighting -

Your running t5 now right? What was your trial lighting setups previously and your thoughts?

Thanks

Yes, I am using an 8 x 80w T5 fixture now. When I first set this system up for SPS I was using a Metal Halide (250 w HQIs) T5 combo fixture but noticed the PAR wasn't as high as I wanted. Wanted to go with 400w metal halides but that wasn't going to work for me, too much heat, so I opted for an 8 x 80w T5 fixture.

Looking awesome, Bill!
That was worth the wait.
I hope you don't wait another year to post!
Photography is superb, as usual.

Thank you. The 3 Monti pictures shown today are Nauti Spiral, Kiwi Cap (green with little yellow polyp) and of course the Tyree Undata which was growing around my Red Convexa aka PC Rainbow. It always starts out somewhat green and keeps that colour near the base of the full colony or any parts of the colony growing into more shaded areas.

Thank you and you are right, need to post more. It is interesting to look back.
Still using the same Canon 20D with Sigma 70mm. I really get the best pictures when shooting top down. Going through glass just doesn't create the same BAM!!

It has been awhile since I updated so I thought I would add my most recent pictures.

Growth has been insane and everything is being trimmed back as fast as I can get to it. This, of course, means my FTS, with all the frag racks in it,
isn't anywhere near as nice as I would like it to look but what can you do?? SPS grow like crazy.

If you reduced the amount of Ca, would that lower growth rate? Just wondering.
