My 225gal. from the beginning

Any new photo's? I have a "new to me" acrylic tank that I think is this size? 6' long 24w x 30 high. Wondering what lighting you are using and equipment, water flow now? Really liked the rockwork also. How did you drill without breaking the rock? When I attempt it the rock ends up breaking off.

I have a completely different style of rockwork now. I love it. The first work, that's pictured earlier in this thread, had one pillar that was drilled rock and the rest of it was zipties and epoxy to pvc.

Once again, my rock work now utilizes pvc and zipties. My aquascaping was very open before, but it didn't look natural. It's both now. I will try and take some pictures today after the lights come on and I clean the glass.
I have a mediocre camera and I'm not very adept at using it, but I should be able to get you a general idea.

As for lighting, I have 8 t-5s with individual reflectors. It's a retrofit that I did myself and mounted in the canopy. I recently changed the bulb colors and the overall color is a little bluer than I'm used to, but everything looks nice.

Everything is going well. I love my tank. All my corals are just babies, but they are growing and thriving and I'm thrilled. My recent history with corals is not so impressive, but an overhaul and a lack of anemones has done wonders. When we cleaned everything out, the sand was filthy and the rocks I made were leeching silicates. Hopefully a fresh start and slower addition of demanding corals will help my future. I just never could get my alk and ca to stabilize before.

I scraped the glass yesterday and it had been a few days, so it didn't clear until I was completely distracted from taking pictures. I have my camera sitting here by my computer now, so hopefully I'll remember or feel guilty anytime I sit down here.

Jerrod, One of the frags I brought home from your house is really starting to color up and get it's purple tips. I believe it's the one that tabled at the top of your tank.

The aquaman (I think that's what it was called) that I won from Oddballs is growing and looks amazing under the actinic.

Please forgive the light reflections and the algae. I can't seem to get any close up shots of corals or the clams; they're all out of focus. My camera isn't awesome.

I owe that rockwork to pwhitby. He took the rock that was the top of my arch and turned it vertical, among other things.

There is the large arch and several swim throughs. The fish love it.

Tank looks great Steph,

You certainly are keeping it clean. I really like thge tiny arch under the main arch structure.

Cant wait to see it full of corals.

P.

all the fish love that little arch. They have and continue to fuss over who gets to call that one home at night. They all swim through it, even the hippo who has to do so on his side.

I wish I could get closer pics of the corals, oh well. sorry. my red planet is my favorite, followed by the pink lemonade, and then probably the rainbow monti. Though, there's one that started brownish and is really coloring up that may take a top three soon. I love those jewels.

a year or so ago, the back side of my center brace separated from the frame of the tank. I used the silicone DOW Corning 999-A to reseal it. It has held. However, a few days ago the front side separated. I have done a repeat of the process and have the bar clamps holding it in place until it has finished curing.

As a showing of my ability to learn, I hung a towel over the end of the clamps that stick out into the walkway in front of the tank. This time, I've only hit my head twice.

The clamps have been on for 40 hours and I can't wait until tonight to remove them.

It's not the smoothest or prettiest job of siliconing (new word?), but it's the center brace and I don't care that much.

Thanks Ed for reminding me of that silicone.
If you are in or around Tulsa and need some, I picked mine up from SSI (Silicone Specialists Inc). They're at 4th and Utica.

I picked up some Momentive RVT108 silicone from Graingers on Meridian as it was recommended on RC.

I can't believe how much my corals have grown! That leather in the corner is actually 50% bigger. I will see if I can't get a friend with a better camera to snap a few pics.

The 225 tank is no more

The 225 tank is no more

Friday morning I woke up to the kids yelling that the tank is leaking.

Interesting tidbit:
Under 2 feet of head pressure, water will shoot 1 foot off the side of the tank.

There were two small holes in the silicone seam on the back corner. The tank was in the process of splitting. Fortunately, the kids waking up and walking past was perfect timing. I estimate that we had about 10 gal of water on the floor - not enough water had drained that any of the power heads or pumps were sucking air.

I had the 10 year old hold the 5 gal bucket to catch water while I brought in the rubbermaid stock tank. I hooked up the drain hose and started syphoning the water out. That's when the other kid noticed that the carpet was wet under that tank. UGH! The drain plug was not in the hole. I figure this time, I poured about 20 gal on the floor. Totally blaming that move on my husband b/c he removed it.
So, I fixed that blunder and got back to draining the tank and moving rocks.

Everything was out and in the stock tank in about an hour or so. Surprisingly the fish were very easy to catch. They readily took turns coming to the corner to be netted out. The last two wrasses were a bit more of a pain b/c they buried themselves in the sand and it was impossible to find them once the sand was stirred. We ended up scooping out the sand sifting through it to find the fish. It took just a bit longer than if they had not been in the sand, because it all had to come out anyway.

So, the upside in all of this, I am now going to get that awful wallpaper off the wall! I think I'll also pull out the carpet.

I don't know if I will set up a new tank yet or not. It's likely that we may start trying to sell our house and move in a year and a half and it seems like a lot of work setting it up and taking it down in that amount of time. Plus, my maintenance was really slacking and I could probably use the break. On the other hand, I am already missing the sound and just the number of times I would gaze at the swimming fish. I'm going to give myself a few days to consider my options.

Anyone keep snakes? I have a 6'x2'x3' Terrarium available.

sorry that really sucks to hear! like you said, the bright side is you caught it relatively early, 225 is a lot of water! hope all the livestock ends up ok
