My 280g Custom upgrade.....

Sorry for your losses. But for every negative there is a positive so I am also glad that everything else is doing great and improving.

Steve,
Sorry to hear about your losses man. That was a heavy hit but like Newbie Aquarist said there are some positives. Hopefully the worst is over and things will turn around.

Updates....

So its been 48+ hrs with no more casualties so hopefully thats a good sign. The remaining fish are all still eating and active which has me hopeful. I realized I had been ignoring my LPS and hadn't taken too many pictures of them in the past so here are some shots taken with my cell phone in the macro mode. Most of the Acans only had one head when I got them over a year ago and have grown very nicely.

Steve very good growth indeed. What is the black thing in background on some of the pictures?

I was hoping no one would see that....its a black, plastic frag plug. I had gotten some frags a while ago that were mounted on them and I had that glued to some rock but one of the critters was persistent and got it loose. No idea where the frag is and I keep forgetting to get the tongs out and fish that out of the tank.

Steve - I thought it was the base of one of the Koralia powerheads but was trying to figure out why it was on the sandbed...LOL. I have thought about using them to mount some corals on the back wall of my tank.

I don't like them. They seem hard to keep in place and if they do break away.....the will move with the motion of the water.

You started with dry rock correct? You have had some really nice growth in a short period of time.

In the pic below what is incrusting on the bottom left side of the rock? Gotta say I like the contrast of colors in the coral too.

Hey Rodney...I had some vanuatu live rock that I used to start my last tank 2 yrs ago. There was about 30lbs or so that got moved into the new tank and the rock in that picture is a piece of Vanuatu. The orange you see is a sponge or at least thats what I am told. I have it growing on a couple of pieces and its a slow grower. The rest of the rock has really colored up nicely though. Im seeing a lot of coraline on the rocks now.

I noticed that too. Looks like a bottle cap with a ziptie on it. :hmm3:?

My wife had a slightly different description of it and she even offered to get it out of the tank because it looks bad. So if the wife (who cant stand the tank) thinks it looks bad then it must look bad.

Steve,

Sorry to hear about your losses. I had an outbreak and lost a bunch of a fish a couple months ago. It's always painful and it's always the fish you like the most (for me it was a banded pipefish and regal angel).

Try to keep your head up. Corals look great!

Thanks Roni! I'm really going to concentrate on the corals for now and getting the surving fish back to health. My fish purchases will definitely shift I am seriously considering having a couple of groups of fish that hang together and leave it at that.

Fish and coral updates

Fish and coral updates

Things have seemed to calm down in the tank with no additional casualties in about a week. The surviving fish are all looking much better with improved color and fuller bellies. They are swimming out in the open now and not hiding as much as they were. Corals have picked back up where they left off before the power failure and are growing with great coloration and pe.

I did have one discovery though, I posted earlier that I had to frag one of my montipora digitata's for what I thought was stn/rtn....well I was wrong. Turns out I have monti eating nudibranchs. I used the Salifert Flat Worm Exit and that had an immediate impact on them. I siphoned/netted as many of them as I could and then performed a 30% wc. Then the two next days performed dips with Coral Rx and several more fell off of the corals. Its been 2 days and I havent noticed any new ones and I have moved all of my monti's to the frag tank for closer observation. I am always very careful about dipping new corals before they go into the tank but I guess I need to be even more careful. I am thinking about switching over to the Bayer Advanced Insect repeller for dips and I see a wrasse or two being added to the tank to possibly help with eradicating these little pests but that wont be for a while. I'm going away for a week in the middle of August so I am thinking I wont add any new fish until after vacation.

How's the search for a new sump going?

I've gotten quotes from some guys but the shipping is killing the prices so I am still looking for some local guys. Noel gave me the name of someone and I have to give him a call.

Steve,

Did you ever get the growth issues on your ATS sorted out? What did you do to correct the issue?

Josh

Josh, I had to delay that last results for reducing the lights to 6 hrs a day because of the power failure. The screen went dry for 15 days so I had to let it go another 2 weeks. I will post some pictures but still getting little growth in the center of the screen. It was filled in a little more with the shorter lighting period. So now I am trying a different lighting schedule. Each side will be on for 1 hr and off for 3 however both sides wont be on at the same time.

Sounds good, Noel somehow knows everyone of the 7 million people in NYC lol. What dimensions are u looking for again?
