My 280g Custom upgrade.....

Marco rock. Going to try to get some "prime cuts" too where Marc takes the rock and cuts it up and I can use for shelving. Thinking about 450 pounds of rock as of now? How much rock did you use?

That's really nice rock. I just put in 250lbs of rock but only about 150 of it in the DT. The rest went into my frag tank that I switched over to a rock tank. I didn't want to over crowd the dt.

Glad to see you are making progress my friend. I am looking forward to watching this turn into a masterpiece.

I'll admit I am still curious as to why your old rock was leaching such high levels of phosphates into the water?

Looks good Steve. Not overcrowded and has plenty of space for fish to swim and space for corals to grow in.

Thanks Henry!!!

Hey Rodney.....I am curious too and my theory is that the really large rocks have so many nooks and cranies that they just got loaded up with waste and detritus. I've sold off/given away all of the pukani rock at this point. I made sure everyone knew about my troubles with the rock and were up for the challenge.

Steve, good looking scape. I'm looking for more rock for my next build but after all your troubles it won't be pukani rock that's for sure
Corey

Hey Corey...dont let my experience with pukani discourage you. So many people use it with no problems at all. If I was to ever use it again here are some things I would do differently with it.....Cure it for as long as possible and not go with really huge pieces. When I pulled out the extra large pieces it was amazing how much detritus poured out of them.

Steve what levels were your phosphates measuring oat when you were having the rock issue?

they got as high as .15ppm. Thru various methods I would get them down to the .06 - .08 range but never any lower. Again I dont want anyone to think that I am bashing pukani rock. While I believe it was the source of my problem, I also believe that I was the cause. Part of the reason I gave up on the rocks was because I was getting pressure from the powers that be (wife) to get rid of them and try something different. She has grown tired of my stress level over the tank. Her feeling was/is, if its not working get rif of it and find something that will. I do recall her saying that in reference to me from time to time....

I am sure that the people that bought the pukani from me will be more successful at ridding the rocks of po4 than I was. They both have a lot of time before their new tanks will be ready so the rocks will cure for several months before they will put them to use.

I really like the new rock. I bet it looks even better in person. I know how hard it is to get a full 3D looking shot of an aquascape. But that looks great!

It seems that there are few instances of ppl w bad luck n pukani rock. I am found base rock, acid dip it with my current rock then MAYBE a few lbs of live rock from tbs.

Mine started at .49 and then went down to .13 after GFO. Last night I tested and I got 0 which didn't make sense. I retested with the same sample for the Hanna checker and got .16 so I did another test with new water and got .05. I only have one test left I need to order more. I really hope I am at .05 and not .16. I am changing 3 gallons of water daily which should help. I would love for you to come over one of these days and bring the martini checker with you! Maybe you come into Williamsburg and we hit a nice LFS that just opened, after that we can go to me and I can drive you back to a subway or the path train.

You my friend have a deal!!!!! So funny because I was going to ask you how close you are to coral theory. One thing I learned about the hanna meter is if you shake the vial too hard when mixing the reagents you will get a higher than normal reading.

So I moved a few corals into the tank on Saturday and took some pictures of them last night.

GSP...this was probably 2"x2" last year when I got it and now it completely covers a piece of rock that is easily 6"x6"

The new rock looks great and I like how you have it arranged. Glad to see its starting to come together again. Those pics above look great too. Everything is looking happy

Thanks Scott! I feel really good about the tank now. I made some minor changes to the rock by opening up the gap between the middle and right island. I also added a few pieces to the tops of each island.
