My 29 gallon after a year .....what do you think?

I guess it is true what they say the best things in life are free. My neighbor has a 75 gallon saltwater tank and gave me a purple and red mushroom last year and all of these grew from the 2 he gave me. As you can see the red took off alot better than the purple.

I am suprised everyone has commented on the mushrooms I was really thinking people would comment more on the lps or sps stuff I have in the tank. I have a new outlook on the mushrooms after all these comments. I just really never thought much about them until now :)

Thanks for all the great comments.........Everyone is making me feel like a real reefer.

yes your tank is very nice! do you have pictures of your carpet amenone?

so are you and your livestock finding that T5s are strong enough to keep the clam and sps? what kind of clam is it?

i have a 33g and I am interested in new lights strong enough to have a clam...thinking of 220w vho or maybe metal halide...but T5s are a more affordable option, aren't they? I am currently running 192w PCs

I have found the T5's are stronger then people give them credit. The growth I have had with my sps, lps and softies are excellent. When I boght my birdsnest in 3 weeks it grew in all directions about 1/4 inch. I really never thought it would grow this fast.

I think the type of clam I have is a Maxima.......I really have trouble remembering :) A friend got it for me for a great deal so I just gave him the money to buy it.

Thought I would show some before and after pictures of my tank with the stand. I originally had a PC light fixture on the tank and then upgraded to T5's. The funny part about all this is the PC fixture produced 130 watts and gave me less growth then my now 96 watt T5 setup.

I have a retro kit that I put in my custom made canopy to go with the stand my wife picked out.

Gorgeous tank. Love the way the trumpet really pops. Once all those Zoas grow out the bottom right will look even more awesome. Where's you get your T5's (if you don't mind me asking).

Thanks so much for the kind words about my tank.

I got the T5's from hello lights. Originally I was going to get them from reefgeek but they missed one of the bulbs I wanted and hello lights matched the prices. I got a TEK retro kit and customer fit it into a canopy I made.

Do you have to dose your calcium? And if so, what do you use? I have a 29g that's been up for about a month and my ca is running 285. Just wondering what others are doing. Especially others with such nice looking tanks!

Great looking Stand and Canopy! Awesome red Mushrooms forsure! I cant wait until mine start to split like that!! :)

Hello, Yes I dose calcium about once a week. I only do this because my calcium would drop if I didn't because I do not like to water change as much as most. (sometimes once every other month since I am lazy) I also dose some baked baking soda about the same time so it can help keep the alkalinity up. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the kind words.

Love the stand and hood. How/Who made it. What is it made out of?

Thanks, The stand my wife approved since this is in our living room, then later I made the hood out of some nice plywood from home depot and glued some of those wood appliques (scrollings) to the face along with that rope molding that I cut into a square and glued to the face as well. I painted the unit off white and then painted on some glaze to give it the antique effect. Glad to see you like it.

Do you have some macro algae in that fuge? If not, try to get some and run the lights 24/7.

Yes actually I need to thin it out :) If you notice the second picture with the full tank and stand shot with the doors open you can not even see in the tank because it is so full of macro algae. The top picture was taken days after I made the refugium and set it up.

looks sweet..insiration for my 29g(start build next weekend)....I was planning on going with current orbit sinch they make a nice 30" hood...and so far they have yet to come out with a staggered t5 set up to fill the full 30" span on a 29(tiko), and you pretty much have me sold on t5s. do you think(or did you) install the retrofit into the old light canopy? do you think it would have been possible? bals....

Thanks for the comments on my tank.

The T5 retro fit I bought I installed in my custom canopy that you see in some of the pictures. I had an orbit fixture on the tank in the begining and thought many times about replacing what was in the fixture with T5 bulbs. To me it looked like it would fix. The only reason I did not do that is because I was getting tired of having to remove the whole fixture everytime I wanted in the tank. With the canopy I made I put a piano hinge in the middle of it so I could have it open from the front without removing it.
