My 300 gal marineland DD Build

Well I haven't really thought my 180 was a large tank, More so on the edge of large from medium. Now I am setting up a 300 gal marineland tank I think it puts me over the edge.
Tank will be a 6 ft by 3 ft by 27 inch deep series marineland tank.
Custom built oak stand and canopy.
2 SFiligoi XR6's or might just go with a luminmax type of DE pendants and Cheap retro.
Red dragon II for closed loop.
1200 gp external pump yet to be decided for return with educators with manifold for media reactors.
Geo 818 ca/Rx
2x Geo 418 media reactors.
Bubble king 250 deluxe.
50-60 gallon sump/ fuge.

I will start the tank with just zoa's and rics at the bottom to spread over the bb. I love sand but I like the look of a zoanthid covered bottom.
Tank and stand will be here roughly 2-3 weeks.
Breaking down the 180 this week.
First sps to be added around next Christmas.

Welcome to the Marineland 300 club. I hate to say this but after the tank is in your room for a while it doesn't seem much bigger than the 180. My wife on the other hand seems to think there is something wrong with me for thinking it's not that much larger.

Good luck with your build and post plenty of pictures.

Is Marineland doing the drilling for the closed loop and if so how much are they charging?

I got a price for the tank, and have not recieved prices for drilling. I will have marineland do it though. I am going with 2-1 inch returns with 2-1 inch feeds for the red dragon. Want to make sure klaus approves first. :)

Mike thankyou, Yeah i would like longer but i would not be able to get it downstairs if it was. :)
I'll post pics as they come. Ordering the tank early next week.

Dilemma, I am uncertain on drilling the tank. LFS still has no answer on how much drilling is. I would love a closed loop, But thinking on power and noise.
I am getting the ts4 for sump return. I want to keep my bills low!!
Any advise would be appreciated on flow. I would like 2 tunze 6305's but that would be close to the red dragonII
There is little known about the RDII like can it run ocean simulations like tunze. Or the software.
I don't want to regret not having it drilled.

Never mind, i am not getting it drilled. I talked to the lfs and they are in protest with marineland. Seems like they want to raise the base price of the tank and add on the drilling too!
Not worth it IMO, Did some number crunching and tunze's will pay for themselves in 2 years vs the hammerhead pump i wa looking at for interim pump for the rdII.
Tank will be here next sat!

Picked up 2 tunze 6201's today and will use a 6125 with them along with my sump return plumbed with penductors. Might not need the tunze 6125, But better safe than sorry.

Tank will be here friday, I skipped the drilling. The closed loops are nice, but 1 the pump i wanted was out of reach, and dunno what it is capable of. The second choice was a hammerhead which i heard running and i was not going to tolorate the noise.
I was happy with tunze and will stay with them. Plus PA is closing out the 6201's with a grat price!

Sump choice is still in the air. I would like a 48x24x18 glass tank, I will go to the local aquarium builders get a tank and do the rest myself.
Ca/rx my old geo 612 was a tad too small will pick up the 624 shortly, and new regulator.
Use my 2 geo 418 media reactors for carbon and GFO.

Lights, Will probably go with 3 luminmax elete's on DE 250's and icecaps.
For actinics 3 60 inch t-5's on an icecap 660.

Skimmer, My Bubbleking 250 Deluxe will work nicely!!

Thats prettymuch it besides i dunno what to do about sand.
BB or use my greycoast. I like sand too much, and starboard is a little on the exp side 200 bucks for the sheet i need.

Well today the tank is coming in and the stand next week.
The custom stand is taking longer than thought. Kinda wish it was the other way around. Would be nice if the stand and cannopy was here first. Oh well tank pics in a few.
Stand is solid oak and 30 inches tall. Gonna be tight getting it in!!!
cannopy is 14 inches tall, So al and all it will be 6 ft tall all together.
The tunze 6201's came in, and the luminmax elete's will be here next friday from reefgeek. I went with 250w DE's 2 of them, Hoping to get the spread i want, If i have to add another oh well.

Here's the Bubbleking 250 deluxe internal and one of the geo 418 media reactors. most likeliy going with a GEO 618 with reef fanatic regulator in a week or so. Maybe after christmas when i can get some more fish funds.
I wont be using this tank for a sump, It was just a bit too tight for my 180 and i had a couple overflows. :(
I will get a 4 ft by 18 by 18 glass tank and add baffles and filtersocks.

Skimate pic of the BK on the 180gal.

Alex ,

Nice to see you upgrading.. I will be following your thread as well . I have bought some goodies from you maybe 2 yrs ago. Equipment list are nice especially the BK..By the way thanks for the help ;)...

Thank you Steve!! And your welcome.
Um the tank was heavy, ALOT heavier than thought. If you are thinking on less than 6 people then forget about moving it, Unless you have 2 Mr Universe's there. LOL
Thankyou to those that helped!! If it werent for you i would have been hosed!!
Now the pics, Not much just a tank on edge.
But one thing i never knew about thise till waynesreef pointed it out. The face of the overflows are removable for cleaning!!!!
Heres the beast laying on its side to await a painting, and stand.
fish040.jpg

This tank is double layered bottom panes. 1/2 inch a piece!!

Now the removable overflow face for easy cleaning! Gotta love that.

Heres where it sits into place on the overflows.

gorgeous tank and a fun eq list. i think you'll be glad you skipped the cl.

i hate that commercial tank manufacturers so commonly cut holes in the bottom of their overflows. you pretty much have to drain the entire tank if you want to swap bulkheads. nice that you can pull em out for cleaning tho.

Thanks,, The bottom slits in the overflows go's in on the bottom and has to rise to the top to go to the overflow so you dont have to drain the tank.
When the stand is in i'll get a better pic

Sound like a great setup is coming. Do you think the GEO 618 will be big enough? I talked with George and he suggested a 624 for a 270 gal, just a thought. Theres a great deal on a 624 on MR.

I thoght of the 624, I have to wait for the stand to be certain.
The stand is 30 inches and the ca/rx would have to fit inside the specs say its 29 inches, and i would have to see if i can squeeze it in. Thanks for the tip, Might have to look at the 818 if the 624 does not fit.

I'll measure mine but 29" sounds right. Tanglovers has an 818. It a beast. I'm sure the 618 would be fine, you might just have to change media more often.

Well i looked at GEO's site and see that the 618 is 24 inches tall and the 624 is 29. That does not add up. If you add 6 more inches of reactor it should be 30. Could you check yours for height please?

Also i gotten a third luminmax elite because the 2 is NOT going to cut it. LOL I really like these lights.
The stand and cannopy was delayed for the snowstorm. Lookin to get hthem monday bar any more major snow.
Cant wait!! Working on the sump this week. I have to stop by and pick up a tank if i cant find a used one cheap.
Its gotta be atleast 44 gals so i would like a 65 gal for skimmer and a little extra leaway for errors.

Great choice of tank sizes. My Marineland 300 arrived at the house on Monday and I'm real pleased with it.

Thank you, I love the 3 ft depth. I am going with the island look, Maybe 3 to 4 rock islands placed around the tank with some huge branchrock arch's
