My 330 Gallon Cube Project

Tank ordered

Tank ordered

Just a FYI, I spoke to the people in Texas that were X people from Oceanic. They sound like they can build a nice large Glass Tank However, they continuously tried to talk me out of starfire glass. I came to the conclusion that most of the starfire glass comes from Canada and they could not be completive, also I wanted a Metal stand that I could apply a Skin to, they only wanted to do Wood, they stated metal would be to costly. ...... OK I ordered the tank, stand, skin for the stand and sent one of the lumamax 400W MH fixtures up to Canada so they could cut the canopy so it would vent better. :smokin:

Finally time for an update. I got a little busy towards the end of the summer and took a break from the tank. I have been able to put some time in on the tank the last few weeks.

I was finally able to install the skimmer for the tank. It is a Deltec AP702. I purchased it used about 4 months ago but the pumps were damaged in shipping. It took quite a while to get insurance money to repair the damage and then UPS decided to keep the pumps. Unfortunately the pumps were not insured enough to replace the pumps. Luckily I found someone that had a skimmer body damaged in shipping and I was able to purchase his used pumps.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25155538@N02/2945350683/" title="2008-10-13_23-03-15_1657 by tluttmann, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3024/2945350683_ef239cedf5.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="2008-10-13_23-03-15_1657" /></a>

I am gravity feeding the skimmer from the overflow box.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25155538@N02/2945351531/" title="2008-10-13_23-03-08_1658 by tluttmann, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3043/2945351531_d6910c2499.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="2008-10-13_23-03-08_1658" /></a>

Next, I decided that to make a change to the closed loop design. I originally installed two Barracuda pumps. One under each side of the tank. The pumps themselves are quiet, but when they both were running together they seemed to generate some resonance that was quite audible. I decided to remove one of the pumps and replace it with an Oceans Motions 4-way. I will also save on electricity and now I have a backup pump if one fails.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25155538@N02/2945373303/" title="2008-10-14_23-35-18_1692 by tluttmann, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3188/2945373303_c323fb9045.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="2008-10-14_23-35-18_1692" /></a>

Now one pump would cycle between the two closed loops and I added two more returns in the back of the tank. I also added two Tunze 6100 hidden in the back pointing diagonally across the tank. I attached them to locline so that I could easily adjust them.

One return over the top through the eurobrace.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25155538@N02/2945359133/" title="2008-10-13_22-58-15_1677 by tluttmann, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3164/2945359133_b7b97c55d2.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="2008-10-13_22-58-15_1677" /></a>

This used to be the intake for the second pump, now it is a return.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25155538@N02/2945360179/" title="2008-10-13_22-58-14_1674 by tluttmann, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3218/2945360179_6f963fb3ac.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="2008-10-13_22-58-14_1674" /></a>

This diagram shows the order of the 4-way returns.

Now, I am really happy with the flow.

I finished a few things in tank room.

Here is the RODI storage on top and saltwater mixing tubs on bottom.

This is the quarantine tank. It is an old 90 gallon just filled 3/4 of the way up. Filled with live stock waiting for the main tank.

Purple tang and a few blue reef chromis.

I am very pleased with the purple tang. In less than 24 hours he ate every bit of hair algae in the tank. I had algae growing in the hammer coral, and I was wondering how I was going to get in there and clean it. I already broke it into three pieces trying. Well problem solved.

Here are a few tank shots. There is a 6-line and a clown in the main tank.

Looks great. What type of sand is that and what are the spare plumbing parts in that last picture?

Oh ya, those plumbing parts on the rock have strings of teflon tape attached. I use them to see the flow in different areas of the tank and currents the corals will have. I forgot to take them out for the picture.

The sand is caribsea seaflor special

Here are some pictures of the current state of the tank. The tank is finally fully cycled. I had a few months with a very impressive diatom bloom.

The tank is finally stocked, I added some live stock that I had in quarentine.

with such an amazing tank...surely you can do a better frame job for it

Not quite done with the frame. I need to spackle, sand and paint it. If you are referring to the style, I wanted it to match the rest of the house. I think it will look nice.

Thanks for the complements, it is really coming along.

Zoo, I got the metal racks at Lowes or Home Depot. They come with 5 shelves that are adjustable. The only mod I did was drill a hole and insert a screw where the shelf and the support meet. Just to help keep the shelf in place. They also have adjustment screws at the bottom to help level. They work great.
