My 500 + gallon system. Last 13 years to now. Build, Aquascaping & more. Lots of pics

I had to run by my LFS to get some inexpensive activated carbon and decided to get some sacrificial lambs. If they do well, I will start restocking fish next Thursday beginning with a few clown fish. My tank looks pretty good now. Water is crystal clear and smell good. The engineer goby is acting just fine and eating. Most of the corals look good now too. Hopefully these damsels do fine which I expect they will. I just hope they don't get too aggressive.

Damsels aggressive?Lol, glad things with your tank are improving

Yea, I've had my share of damsels that picked on other fish. Even had one that would attack me every time I put my hands in the tank. I don't normally do damsels but I needed something cheap and hardy to test the waters with before I put anything of value in.

So far, everything is looking great especially considering what the tank has been through. If I didn't know better I would think nothing ever happened. Almost all of my corals are back to normal and those that are not seem to be recovering. Funny but some of my leather corals look better than ever. Go figure. My only concern is my large RBTA who decided to move a bit and is now bothing some of my large fuzzy mushrooms. I might have to figure out how to place and point a powerhead in order to encourage it to move back to the other side of the cave/peninsula. The second RBTA has been in hiding but I'm not to worried about it.

I think I lost one of the new fish which doesn't surprise me. After acclimation, I was emptying water into the 5 gallon bucket that I was using for my skimmer waste and one of the damsels went AWOL from the bag and into the waste bucket. It was some pretty nasty water that he jumped into and remained in for a couple minutes while I scrambled for a net. He may be in hiding but the other 3 fish and the remaining Engineer Goby are doing great and eating just fine. Matter of fact, the new damsels ate within 45 minutes of acclimation and ate aggressively which was a bit surprising. My ORP is still in the mid 250's which is low but not worrying at this point. I know that will come back up to normal levels in due time.

So having said that, I am 100% confident that I have saved my tank and the corals as well as it's biological bed. Thursday, I will begin restocking starting with a few clown fish and maybe a new Fox face and Lemon Peel Angel. I really can't wait to get my fish population back up. It's still depressing not seeing my beautiful fish in there but relieving to see all my corals looking good. Especially after having expected a complete and total loss of my tank.

Frankly, I am absolutely astonished and euphoric that my tank looks so good after having been in such a dire situation. I never would have in a million years expected to be able to write this post after last Thursdays nightmare. I was certain it would all be gone.

holy cow....... that is one of the most amazing tanks i have ever seen, when i have more time i will go through all 11 pages and get caught up but that is a great tank.

As a result of the recent events, my RBTA decided to move to a not so decent spot where he was bugging some nearby corals. He didn't move very far and instead decided to hang out on the other side of the peninsula that his lived under for some time now.

So yesterday I devised and executed a plan to make his new home unfavorable which seemed to work well as he moved under the peninsula. I expect when I get home today, he will be back in his old location.

Here is a short video of the solution which consists of a Koralia pump attached to my cleaning magnet.

Other than that, the tank is back on track. I may go pickup a new Fox Face today Jim is bringing me a few clown fish tomorrow along with a Lemon Peel angel and a Naso tang.

Just brought home a new Fox Face.. He's pretty small compared to my last one. At least things are moving forward and the tank is looking great again.

Acclimation complete. He's a cute little Fox Face! Looking forward to tomorrow when some more fish will go in!

Out of an abundance of caution, I decided not to add any fish today. Instead, I will wait a few more days or a week to see how the Fox Face does. Rather be safe than sorry. This is tough as it pains me every time I look in the tank to see it without all the fish. Oh well, patience is a virtue.

Very sorry to see that happen to such a beautiful tank, hope the restocking continues to go well and good luck

Just a bit of an update. The tank is doing great once again. Every coral rebounded and many look better than ever. Go figure. I'm not really sure that I even lost anything at this point other than fish. Maybe a mushroom or two and a few polyps but that would be it. Only one coral shows any kind of distress and that is a finger coral which had some damage but is now healing up well. Even the star polyps that I thought were dead have rebounded and growing again while most of my leathers are looking better as far as polyp extension than they or any leather in the tank ever did.

The ORP has been climbing 5-7 points every day for the last four or five days. It kind of stalled around 250 for a little while. Its now up to a peak of 278 today and tomorrow should hit 285 based on the trend the last 4 or 5 days. I have not been running Ozone for over a week now as I didn't feel I needed it based on what I was seeing in the tank.

I really love my Apex. I've always loved it for the control it has provided me over the years but taken for granted it's monitoring ability whether it's PH, ORP or Conductivity. I have to say, it's really nice to be able to track the certain things like my ORP which to me is a very good indicator of a tanks water quality. Something that was never a concern before this issue is so useful to me now just by shear virtue that it gives me more tangible evidence (beyond my corals health) that my tank is rebounding.

This graph is my ORP trend for the last week. It's nice to see the continual improvement without my intervention other than daily 5 gallon water changes. A couple days ago, I added some Mircobacter to the water in the compartment with the ORP probe and you can see where the ORP dropped a bit as a result but bounced right back.

The new fish are doing well. The two Sargent Major Damsels broke out with a case of Lympho which was a bit concerning to say the least. One is completely cleared up and the other is just about normal now. At first I thought it might have been ich which really had me concerned as these fish came from a copper treated QT system. It was also one of the reason why I decided not to add any more fish last week. Fortunately the Fox Face didn't show any signs of it and is doing well. He's still pretty shy but keeping himself fat foraging on the rocks and avoiding my feeding.

My little power head trick didn't seem to phase the anemone as he just moved enough to avoid the direct flow so I pulled the power head out of the tank last week. Well today I came home and I didn't see him at which time I about panicked. After a quick glance around the tank, I found him back in his original spot which was a relief on many levels as he is no longer bugging any of the corals.

That is about it for now. I will get back on track with my restocking efforts maybe as early as this weekend as there are a few clowns, a couple yellow tail damsels and a lemon peel angel at my friends house waiting to come home. After that will be a bunch of cardinals and maybe some new flame angles. I've got a long way to go to get my fish population back to where it was but it will start getting closer over the next 30 days.

So sorry to just read this and hear of your losses. I'm sure you will turn it around to make it even better!

Today will be a good day! My ORP has eclipsed the 300 mark without the use of my ozone. It's been climbing steadily every day now.

I'm going to be adding some new fish later today. I've got to go pick them up around 2 this afternoon. Those include 3 Ocellaris clown fish, one Naso tang, one lemon peel angel and one or two yellow tail blue damsels. These guys were supposed to go in last Thursday but I decided to hold off. My two new damsels at the time had a break out of lympho which they have overcome. The Fox Face has been just fine with no issues so I feel comfortable going to Jim's to pick up the new recruits. He also got me 6 PJ cardinals and a flame angel from the wholesalers earlier this week but those are in QT now so I will be waiting a week or two for those.

The stars seemed to have aligned on another fish front. A customer of his in Jackson Hole Wy is breaking down a tank and offered all of his livestock to me at no cost if I cover the freight. There are a pair of Vlamingi's, a Flame Angel, a Bi-color angel, wrasses, blennies, goby's as well as other fish and some soft corals. I will be shipping him up the fish boxes, heat pack, bags and rubber bands on Monday. He will be picking up oxygen for the bagging. The tentative plan would be for him to ship me the livestock a week or so from this Monday. As such, I should be back to near normal stock levels in the next couple weeks. I'm really excited again.

As for my son. He's had a couple weeks to think about his actions and choices as he has been in Juvi held on felony vandalism charges. I also found more grass and a digital scale in his room which was no surprise as I've had good reason to believe he was dealing. He's on probation and knows better. I go back to court Weds at which point I will be requesting they drop the charges which they will. He will be moving in with my mom who lives in a different county. He will start at a new high school next Thursday and will also begin a four day per week counseling/rehab program. I'm hopeful that between the fresh start and the peer oriented group counseling coupled with a change of PO officers, he will finally get his life back on track. He has been focused on his school credits while in Juvi and has made up some extra credits for high school. He's a remarkably good student who makes too many bad choices. If he can stay clean and out of trouble, that would go a long way in restoring my relationship with him.

I will post some pictures later today of the new fish.

Things sound positive for your son, it's up to him to take advantage of these new opportunities and get his act together, prayers for your family
