My 500G Osama Reef-2

You'd have to either turn over your rock to find them, or examine the tank in the dark with a red flashlight (most marine creatures can't see in red light so they won't run away).

where to place: Twenty Ricordias moving to DT

where to place: Twenty Ricordias moving to DT

Obtained yesterday from a fellow hobbyist 20+ ricordias that he bought as a group buy. Planning to place them in a cluster on the sand bed. Is this the best local for rics. Would like to hear your thoughts. I already have three (had four and one disintegrated???)

Nice Shoices at Matt's store in Mundeline

Nice Shoices at Matt's store in Mundeline

Was at Matt's (my system designer/installer) store in Mundelein and he had some beautiful selection of corals and fish. I never mention Matt's store before but was impressed with what he had today more than I usually am with his stuff. Hope it is OK to make such a statement here ..

Those are snail eggs. Depending on who laid them they might or might not hatch.

Happy Memorial day to you also.

Skimmer NOT working?

Skimmer NOT working?

Skimmer just dumped 30 plus gallons while I was not around and caused APEX to shuyt off one of the two main tank pumps. I am now refilling. This skimmer works great skims great SOMETIMES and other times just acts up like. Not sure of what is going on. Glad Matt will be here tomorrow. He will advise and we go from there.
Here is a picture of it skimming like crazy..

Where as for two plus days not it would not make any bubbles in the lower sections and then not skimming. Cleaned the skimmer yesterday and still not where it should be in performance at all. I just addeda whole buch of corals and cleaning crew and need this skimmer to work..

Any thoughts or experience with such an industrial type skimmer is appreciated

Happy memorial day to all and a Salute and Thank you to every Veteran out there

Thanks Wayne was concerned that they might be something NG. Not sure I mind if they do or do not hatch. I like them as Live food for fish if fish consider that like caviar and grow healthy!!

Hope you like these pictures of few of the corals I have been adding to the tank

why are you not using a skimmate locker on that bad boy? a superlocker sized one would do great on a skimmer that size and holds up to 6 gallons using the taller buckets. that way you have it connected directly to your apex and it'll shut off the skimmer pump when time to empty or if your skimmer decides to go crazy. i see you have your drain line from the skimmer cup hooked up but to what?

Monkiboy: skimmer drains into a drain pipe that goes gown to basement sump. Designed to allow me not to worry about skimmate while traveling. Also I cannot empty 5-6 gallon buckets with my bad back.
My concern is that expensive piece of equipment is really tough to calibrate. It is still not skimming/working right. Not foaming up like it is supposed to. Maybe it is something in the water that is causing it to go crazy will see in another 24 hrs, has been over 48 hrs so far...

who said anything about carrying emptying 5-6g buckets by hand?! haha. what most will do is just put a uniseal on the bottom of the bucket and a pump inside it with a drain to the outside or drain nearby. in this way, your skimmer bucket fills from normal operational or from an overexcited skimmer and it shuts off the skimmer and your apex automatically drains the bucket to drain or outside. you set your logic and code in the apex that if the skimmate superlocker fills more than once a day let's say or in two days, whatever beyond normal frequency for you is, then it notifies you via text/email before restarting the skimmer pump. in this way in case of an overexcited skimmer you will know before it kick starts the skimmer again. that coupled with a swabbie on that skimmer of yours would make handling/smelling skimmate a thing of the past as your skimmer neck will be kept clean and skimmer cup too keeping your skimmer running at top efficiency and more reliably.

if you've been going crazy with epoxy with the coral additions, some do play with the skimmers ability to do it's job reliably more than others. there are specific epoxies made that advertise they will not affect your skimmer performance. as long as your skimmer intake is clear and clean, the feed pump is running reliably and consistently, the skimmer broken in, and you're able to keep your hands out of the tank it should run reliably for you.

Thanks a million. Very informative monkiboy. It must be my hands in the tank.. I cannot, not keep mounting stuff especially at the beginning when I am weekly adding to the tank. Skimmer is starting to improve its performance. Still quite wet skimmate but nothing like two days ago

i'm able to see it but watching any video on pbucket is a horrific experience because of buffering and bandwidth issues on their server side. youtube is much more stable. are you able to upload there instead? thanks for taking a video to share with us!

Dave my photobucket is all open to public. You had difficulty before but you solved it and I do not know how.

monkiboy if you educate me a bit on how to to Utube I can do it later tonight or tomorrow

Adding Fish

Adding Fish

As some may recall I lost several fish that I did not quarantine and most likely introduced ich into the DT. I was able to remove four fish into a QT. One fish,a wrasse, totally did not like the QT and committed suicide. The other three have been cleaned up and were introduced to the tank water at 50% in the QT for three weeks then were placed in the frag tank on the same water system as the display tank for two weeks. ALL are clear of any signs of ich and all are eating well . I have started moving those fish into the DT starting with a yellow tang shown below. Hopefully he will not catch ich as I was unable to remove a cardinal fish and a blue tang from the main system. On Sat the other three fish who have been in the same water as the DT water will be moved into the DT. Hoping all goes well... The DT has only had two fish for about three months with no visible indications of ich.

if you don't already have a youtube or google/gmail account, you will need to set up a free account with them.

here's the DIY for setting up an account:

here's the DIY for uploading a video (once your account has been created)

i think you mentioned you were shooting the video with your phone. if your phone was released in the last few years they almost all have an option to upload to youtube from the factory sans windows-OS phones. so you can take the video, go the video's options on your phone, and select upload to youtube. the first time your phone may ask you to provide your google/youtube account information but after then you'll be able to upload easily without entering it again. then you can access it from the web and copy the link here for all to enjoy.
