My 525 gallon.

Hey Guys just want to show off my new tank. First a little about myself. I have been into the hobby for 4 yrs now. I just broke down my previous tank (75 gal) and moved all the LR over to the 525. I know I should of let the 525 break in more, but my 75 was suffering do to my time going into the new tank.

Here is a breakdown of the tank. It's a Tenecor 525, dimensions are 120x48x24.

Fir circulation I decided to go with 2 Tunze waveboxes working in sequence. My return pump is a Sequence 5800.

For lighting I went experimental if you would call it that. I have 2 14" solatubes running down over the tank. 3 400 MH's 2 250 watt MH's and 440 watts of VHO (4 5ft bulbs).

I also have 2 zepher fans running 24/7 to exhaust the heat from the tank.

Skimmer is a MRC MR 4-R

Calcium reactor is a Jetstream 2.

Sump was made from glasscages, 125 gallon acrylic.

Pretty much it in a nutshell. Of course there are a ton of minor details that I left out but I will post them as I remember.

Here are some pics.

Wow! That's one big tank! You're gonna have a blast filling it up...

...I'm too scared to go that large...lol...I'll stick with my 34g...

Congrats on getting it up and running! Great pics!

What kind of livestock are you planning for?
As I understand, waveboxes are supplementary to pumps and powerheads, so you may need more water movement.

I am going to make it a mixed reef, but I will lean to SPS. I wasn't to sure about the waveboxes until I saw them in motion. These things pump tons of water. Honestly you have to see it to realize how powerfull they are.

Very nice system...

If your planning on keeping SPS You will need a lot more flow...

I have a 500 and run (4) iwaki 70's on 1" sea swirls. (1) iwaki 100 on my 1 HP chiller. Also have a Hammerhead on CL. I still need to run (4) 6200 on a multicontroller. and this is still not enough.. Thinking of addin two more 6200's..

My feeling is you will need much more lighting.. My tank is only 8' long and I run (6) 400 watt halides, (4) 160 VHO's, and (4) 96 watt PC's..

You don't list a chiller?? If you upgrade your pumps and lights, you will need a chiller...

One last thing, that looks like a backflow check valve over your pump. If you are plumbed below the water line, and your sump can't handle the overflow water. You will find a flood in your future.. With check valves it's not if, but when they will fail... they are not made for reef tanks, and I wouldn't put one on any system. My first reef had one and I came home to 200 gallons of water on the floor...

Good luck looks like a killer system...

awesome tank...is there a website to where you baught it from.i would love to have a tank that size one day down the road

Man, that thing is wicked. Makes me want to sell my car and buy a tank and a beach cruiser.

Amazing. That is one big tank... water changes are the one thing I don't particularly care for in this hobby and I only have a 125 gallon tank. I would be interested to learn what your water change schedule and scheme will be for this system (650 total volume x 10% = 65 gallons, min, per change - yikes!).

I have about the same size volume.. I change about 50 gallons a week, 200+ month.. Need to figure 60.00 a month in just salt... My system runs about 500.00 for monthly costs...

Happy Reefing

Thanks

Ricks if I need more flow once it starts filling up, I'll prob go with more Tunze. I would hate to plumb in a closed loop now. As far as a chiller I am still looking into which one I want to get. I was thinking I could get one that could be left outdoors and run the lines through the wall. I also heard there are liquid cooled chillers which will work for me as well. Water changes are going to be plumbed into the system also. I made a manifold so I could add to the system as I get it going. I really don’t plan on adding much more lighting. I am really interested in seeing what the solatubes can do. If I need more the canopy is real easy to work on, it slides out and I can access every part of it with ease.

Jgs107, I pretty much bought everything in pieces through research.

No one has asked yet, how do you like the solar tubes? Do you switch off some of your halides on nice days? Please share your experience thus far.

Beautiful tank, very nice dimensions.

The solatubes are great IMO so far. Right now what I am doing is having the tank wake up with the tubes. It's pretty cool to see the light slowly rising in the tank, something that we can't duplicate with artificial lighting. My VHO's come on @ 11 am and I am running only 3 400 watt MH right now between 2-7 and the VHO's shut off at 9. What I’m trying to replicate is the natural affect we can’t get with artificial lighting alone. Coral reefs don’t have the same lighting everyday. The sun is at it’s hottest for a few hours a day and there are overcast days to take into effect. Again I will tweak until I perfect it. I have no moon lights installed yet but I will have them in this weekend. You get a very low, practically unnoticeable effect from the moon and some nights. Not something to be able to view your tank with.

As far as the skimmer. I looked around and have spoken to people that had experience with them and I liked what I heard. I will find out for myself...lol.

Keep us posted on the solatubes, I'm curious if you can grow SPS under that kind of defused light.

Also what about that check valve???

Happy Reefing

I will keep you posted on the solatubes. As for the check valve. I am going to try to drill a hole right below the water line in the tank. If I can't manage that, I will cut the PVC and run it again. Thanks for that info. I figured these things to work since they charge so much for them...lol.

Also forgot to add, I ordered 2 Tunze 6201. I will have them this week.

One quick question to anybody browsing through. I need english instructions to the Jetstream2. Can someone help me with that pls.

Thanks

Vic
