My 65 Gallon build

Yea I've tried TTM twice now. First time, one of three made it to the DT. This time two dead and I said screw it. The other two are in the DT. Hiding a lot but visibly eating. I'll take my chances and figure out what I want to do next time.

My 65 Gallon build

QT debate aside, and thankfully not many people pay attention to this thread so there was no debate lol, the tanks doing well. Couldn't find the Blenny last night or this morning, but wasn't too worried, my rock has tons of caves in it. I haven't seen the peppermint shrimp since the day after it went in the tank, but all the aptasia I've been cultivating, not purposely of course, is starting to disappear.

Came home from work today to find the blenny perched on the outside of the overflow. When it saw me it swam in through the teeth to hide inside it. Wonderful... I'm actually shocked, because the clown pair use the overflow as a host, and they didn't seem to mind the blenny being there. It came out and was grazing the rocks soon after, but probably something I'm going to have to address.

Took a quick video of the tank, and the blenny grazing which is cool to watch.

Lol that's funny, I would be concerned and entertained all at the same time.

And I think more people watch this thread than you think.

Perhaps the questions you ask get accurately answered, thus negating the need for further influence.

Great vid, great thread. I'm in for the long haul

Haha yea I wasn't terribly worried about it since he was eating and seemed healthy, but having lost the Royal Gramma and YWG I was a bit nervous. Seeing him on the overflow I was at first relieved. Then he swam through the teeth into the box and that was the "ugh" moment.

Found the blenny in the sump this morning. In the first section, which is all but impossible to access. That was fun. Took a bunch of plumbing apart, got the floor all wet, and stuck all sorts of things in chasing the fish around. 2 or so hours of on and off work, and got him out. Good thing work was light today haha. Ugh

Working now to build something out of egg crate to prevent that from ever happening again.

All this nice rock, tons of caves, and the idiot hides in the overflow, gets through the u-tube, into the back section, goes another section over, and down the drain....

I love the Bengaii cardinals. I might add a couple soon.

I lean more towards the pj cardinals tho, the wife loves the red spots. Either way, they are a super hardy fish, and pretty much the most peaceful fish in a tank.

Yea, the wife likes them, so if it keeps her happy I'll get some in there. Last two didn't make it out of QT so hopefully these two will. Already eating so that's a step better than last time.

Thanks!

So, starting to think I want to try and get the tank stocked with pods. I have plenty of life in the tank, small tube worms, spaghetti worms, bristle worms, but no visible pod population. When picking up the cardinals, LFS had 3 mandarins in stock. When I was first planning this tank, I was considering dedicating it to raising a mandarin. Decided against it because of the challenge, honestly wanted my first bigger tank to be more simplified and stocked with easy to care for fish. I am already regretting this, because the fish looks awesome.

So, since the busy summer months fast approaching, I am planning on letting the tank just grow out for a while, without adding much else. In the meantime, I am considering setting up my 10 gallon tank again, and dedicate it to raising pods, and stocking the DT with pods as well. I figure a few months of adding tons and tons of pods to the tank, along with keeping a good culture going in the separate 10 gallon tank, I should be able to maintain enough of a population to successfully keep a mandarin. We'll see. At the very least it will be a good experiment in setting up the tank to culture pods.

You should look into a set of corals. You can get a nice set for around $150 and get free shipping from select sellers.

I chose to get a set of 6 really nice corals for my first livestock.

I got about 12 corals in the tank before I decided it needed fish to accompany it. But I had a ton of stuff to look at, and a constant signifier that my tank was healthy.

Fish are also a good option, but my next tank build I will still choose to start with a heavy load of corals first.

Decided to mess with the plumbing a bit. After adding the overflow cage to keep the blenny out of the sump, the flow was never quite right again. It was loud with just the single open pipe drain. Now my flow is a bit slower but oh man did it improve the noise level. Took two tries, this is a picture of the first try, I trimmed the height down a bit too much on it. Second one is much better.

Hole on the top is 1/8". I'm curious if I make it bigger, can I step the flow from the return up a bit higher, anyone know?

I just wanted to point out something on this thread that has been bothering me when it comes to the overflows.

If you use even half of your brain to setup the overflow and sump correctly, it is nearly impossible to flood your house with an overflow.

My overflow can't overflow DT tank if siphon breaks...here is why:
1) 2 vertical float switches for double the redundancy that kill power to return pump if water level gets too high. Both have snail guards 2)small compartment for return pump to sit in only allows only so much water back into the DT anyway. DT tank can handle nearly 2 gallons of water before it hits float switches. The compartment for the return pump only holds a gallon of water. As long as I keep my ATO reservoir with less than a gallon of RODI, the DT tank can't be overflowed even with ATO.

I can simulate a power outage over and over and over and never have a siphon break. But just in case it did, I also have a aqualifter on the siphon tube to restart it just in case it did fail.

There isn't a bean animal, herbie, durso, or overflow that could completely stop Murphy from visiting your home. If it is going to happen, it is going to happen someway somehow. At the end of the day, the seams of your tank are more likely to separate and flood your floor than an overflow is if you go through all the proper stages of fail safe redundancies. I have friends that have had overflows that didn't break for several years and only came down due to upgrading a tank.

Just make sure you go though all the checks, double checks and triple checks you can to ensure if one safety mechanism fails, you have another ready.

I do want to point out as well that yes, if I cut off the return pump to DT, what happens to temp of DT? I have a Aqueon 200 Pro that is solid black that I keep in corner of DT. Hardly know it is there.

If I could have it my way, I would have a bean animal system but that will be a year from now minimum.
